Big changes on the cards for driving licence validity period in SA

South Africans may soon spend far less time at licensing centres.

The SA government is again weighing an eight-year validity period for most driving licences, a move that could ease pressure on motorists and reduce long queues.

The idea has been in discussion for years, and Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says it is now getting serious attention.

Could South Africans keep their driving licences for longer?

Speaking before the National Council of Provinces on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, Creecy said her department completed a study on licence validity before she took office. She reviewed the findings after her appointment.

The study suggested that bus, taxi, and heavy-vehicle drivers should maintain a two-year renewal cycle due to the higher risk associated with their jobs.

For ordinary motorists, an eight-year validity period was recommended and was viewed positively by the minister, Mybroadband reported.

Creecy stressed that any change carries financial consequences, however.

The Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) depends on renewal fees to fund its operations, and extending validity would reduce that income.

Creecy said she has requested that her department map out the financial impact so she could make an informed decision.

“What I asked is: can we understand the financial implications if we make this decision?” Creecy said.

“I’m not saying that one would make the decision if there were significant financial implications, and I don’t think it’s wise to make decisions in an executive office if you don’t understand the consequences.” she added.

The department first indicated plans to propose a validity extension in its 2025/26 annual performance plan released in June 2025. Progress now appears delayed, and the minister is waiting for the updated analysis before deciding on next steps.
