How bet builders work (and why punters love them)
A bet builder is simple. It is a combination of bets from within the same match. So, it’s almost the equivalent of an accumulator, but your bet builder is based on the events in that one match, rather than on four or five different fixtures.
Let’s assume that Liverpool are playing Manchester City. An example bet builder on this match could be:
- Liverpool to win
- Both teams to score
- Mohamed Salah to score anytime
- Over 8.5 corners
- Erling Haaland to have 2+ shots on target
You can pick from numerous different markets – it doesn’t just have to be the exact markets used in the example above. A player to be booked can be added, a red card, a penalty to be taken, the list of options is endless.
This is why punters absolutely love bet builders.
Furthermore, with some builders only needing two or three selections, you have the option to bet on as few selections as you want.
For example, you might think Liverpool will win and Mohamed Salah will score, so you can just back that.
Don’t forget, you can also have as many selections as you want if that is your preference.

Bet builder offers and promos
Bet builders are an eye-catching and very popular bet. So to try and stand out from the crowd, bookmakers can often add offers and promotions to their builders. These can range from boosted odds to substitute insurance.
Below we look at some of these promos in more detail:
Free Bets
New customer free bets can often be based on bet builders. For example, you may get £30 in free bets, with £10 of them to be used on a bet builder. Don’t worry if you’re an existing customer, you won’t be left out. Here, you have the option of receiving your money back as a free bet if your bet builder loses on a specific match.
Cash out
The cash out option gives you the chance to take your winnings early if your bet is winning. For example, if four of the five legs in your bet builder have already won and you are just waiting on Liverpool to win for the whole bet to win, you could cash out. You will take slightly reduced odds, but the trade off is that if Liverpool concede a late equaliser, your bet has already won.
Enhanced odds on pre-build bet builders
Some bookmakers will have pre-built bet builder options. They could be something like, Man City to win, Erling Haaland to score anytime and over 2.5 goals in the match. If the builder pays 5/2, you might find your bookie has enhanced the odds to 3/1. This is always a great option if you were planning on placing that bet in the first place.
Substitute insurance
We’ve all seen the advert on the tele. The guy in the pub places his bet on the big man to score, only for his selection to immediately get subbed off.
Fortunately, substitute insurance protects us against this. Using this innovation, if your player gets subbed off, the bet rolls over onto the player coming onto the pitch, and if he scores instead, your bet still wins.
This is great to use on teams with big squads, where the player coming onto the pitch is invariably just as strong as the player they are replacing.
Bet builder insurance
This is where the bookmaker gives you your money back as cash or a free bet if one leg lets you down. There are usually rules and regulations for this promotion. They could be that your bet builder has to be minimum odds of 4/1 or have a minimum of five selections.
It generally varies from bookie to bookie, so it is best to check before you place your bet.
Weekly specials
Some bookmakers now have weekly offers for players who regularly place bet builders. It could be that every time you place a bet builder (say, for a minimum of £25), you get a free bet builder to use valued at a fiver.
Other alternative weekly specials are free bet clubs tied to your usage. So every time you place a bet of any sort, it counts towards a free bet or some sort of weekly bonus. While you may not receive a free bet builder reward, any bet builder you wager during the week will count towards your reward.
Cashback offers
Cashbacks can see you get a percentage of your money back if your bet builder loses. While these might not seem like great offers, they add up over time. Bet builders can be long shot bets that pay well when they win. But losing streaks can add up, so anything you can get back is a bonus.
Event-specific specials
High profile events like the Champions League final or an England match can often see the bookies offering event-specific specials. For example, this could be a 50 percent boost on top of a winning bet builder.
It’s always worth checking for these promotions, as different bookies target different events and these boosts aren’t just restricted to high profile matches like the FA Cup final, etc. In some cases a bookmaker might sponsor that team and have a special available on their next random match.
Pre-made bet builders (request-a-bet features)
Not everyone wants to create their own bet these days, sometimes there are just too many markets to choose from.
To help, the bookies offer pre-made bet builders. These can simply be known as featured or popular bet builders, while some bookies choose to market them to be more brand specific.
Below we take a closer look.
Betfred
Betfred is one such bookie, they offer two alternative options. First you can use any of Betfred’s pre-built options such as their bet builder boosts, popular bet builders or featured bet builders.
You also have the option to tweet Betfred using the #PickYourPunt hashtag to request odds for a bet that isn’t available through their standard bet builder tool.
BetMGM
BetMGM’s main alternative to creating your own bet builder is their Golden Combos. Here you can select one of many pre-built combination bets with pre-determined odds.
There is also a Premier Picks section that offers more alternatives at boosted odds, but there are fewer selections to choose from in this category.
Betway
Betway has a huge selection of pre-built wagers known as Top Bet Builders. The bets are listed in groups up to certain odds, such as up to 10/1, up to 25/1, etc.
For wagers not listed on the site or through their bet builder tool, there is the option to tweet Betway with the hashtag #BetYourWay to build your own bet.
Midnite
Midnite has a regular promotion of pre-built boosted bet builders available on all big matches and they also list the most popular bet builders.
The enhanced wagers are simply known as Boosts and are available on Champions League and Premier League matches, as well as live TV matches in the Championship.
bet365
Bet Boost is the name given to bet365’s pre-built bet builders that are available with boosted odds. The platform also allows you to build your own bet builder, combining selections from different matches.
Bet365’s ‘Quick Pick’ option lets you easily build your own bet builder using a selection on a player, the match result, total goals, total corners and total cards.
Tote
Tote offers a selection of pre-built multis and combos on all major football matches. Their Bet Builder Insurance offer is a big winner. Here you can get a free bet builder up to £5 if one leg of your bet builder lets you down.
talkSPORT BET
talkSPORT BET helpfully list all of the matches they have bet builders available for on a dropdown menu on their website. Unlike a lot of the more established bookies, the selection of matches they cover isn’t as comprehensive.
They also offer enhanced odds Bet Boosts which is their version of the pre-built bet builders.
Coral
Coral offers a small selection of pre-built bet builders, with the emphasis more on you to build your own. You can build your bet using all the usual markets and they are available on all the major leagues, with bet builder matches clearly marked.
Another thing to keep an eye on is Coral’s daily rewards shaker – this is free to play and it often has a bet builder perk as the prize.
Spreadex
If you’re a Spreadex user who doesn’t want to build your own bet, you are in luck as they have a huge list of the most popular bet builders wagered on each high profile match.
There is also an option to back one of their Price Boosts on high profile matches, which is basically a bet builder with boosted odds. The firm offers pretty much the same as all the other major players.
Bet builder and Acca bets compared
Bet builders and acca bets are very similar in some ways. They are both a single bet made up of multiple selections. The difference is that a bet builder is multiple selections wagered on the one match, whereas an acca is a bet made up of selections taken from multiple matches.
A bet builder is the perfect wager for a punter who doesn’t want to wait all weekend for all the selections on their acca to play. A bet builder can be placed on a 12.30 kick off on Saturday afternoon, and it is settled by full time. Whereas an acca could run all the way through Saturday and into Sunday’s fixtures.
Smartest markets to use in your bet builder
There used to be a limited number of markets available to use for a bet builder. However, as the bet has grown in popularity, the markets available have increased. But with so many options now available, it’s even more important to select the right ones.
We look at the most popular markets for a bet builder below:
Both teams to score (BTTS)
Historically, a bet on both teams to score is a very popular bet on football betting sites. It has also become a staple selection for any bet builder. Matches involving attacking teams are good to use if you want to include BTTS in your bet builder. Not only do attacking teams score in the majority of matches, they can also leave plenty of gaps at the back, making both teams to score more likely.
Over/Under goals
Over/under 2.5 goals has long been a common football bet. You can use this option in a bet builder, but you now also can include other variations of the bet, such as over 1.5 goals or under 4.5 goals instead. You can choose your selection based on what you think the score might be. If you can see a match finishing 2-1 to either team, over 2.5 goals is a good choice. For 3-1 or 2-2, you include over 3.5 goals.
Player to score anytime
If you’ve picked Liverpool to win as one of your bet builder options, you will no doubt want to select a player to score as part of your bet. A popular selection would no doubt be Mohamad Salah. If the Egyptian striker’s odds are too short, it’s not a huge problem as you will be combining it with other wagers that will boost your overall bet odds.
An extra tip to look out for: a Liverpool win with a Salah goal is often the sort of pre-built bet builder that will get boosted odds for headlines.
Corners Over/Under
You can add the amount of corners you feel will be taken in a match to your bet builder. This bet can cover the total corners in a match, and it can also be team specific. So for example, if you’re unsure if a match will have a total number of corners, but you do expect the home team to have six or more, you could just select over 5.5 home corners. This is a great option for set-piece teams like Arsenal.
Cards (yellow/red)
Cards can also be covered in bet builders. Again, it can be match or team specific. Match specific could be over 3.5 cards (of any colour) in a match. Team specific bets are the same, but there would be a lower threshold (ie, over/under 1.5 cards). There is also a player specific option, where you can include a player to pick up a card. These selections are far higher paying than match or team card selections.
Shots on target
Another popular addition to the bet builder is shots on target. These are based on Opta stats. Take Erling Haaland as an example. You can choose whether he will have 1+, 2+, 3+, etc shots on target. The more shots on target you go for, the longer the odds. The player doesn’t have to score in this market, although goals do count. Overall, as long as the shot is on target (score or saved), it counts towards your wager – and that includes headers.
Biggest bet builder wins in the UK
Like with an accumulator bet, a bet builder can be a low-risk for high-reward wager. You can place a wager for as little as one pound and win big if all your selections come in.
An example of such a win is a bet365 punter, who in 2021 pulled off a remarkable win in a multi-match bet builder.
He wagered on two players to be carded in a match between Aston Villa and West Ham (John McGinn and Pablo Fornels), combining it with another two in a match between Norwich and Leeds (Kenny McLean and Jack Harrison). All four picked up cards and the two bet builders combined paid an astonishing £94,350.
Another huge payout was achieved on Man City’s 6-0 win over Ipswich Town in January 2025.
A City fan successfully predicted Erling Haaland and Phil Foden to score, Kevin de Bruyne and Matteo Kovacic to assist, Jeremy Doku and Kovacic to register over 0.5 shots on target and Mattheus Nunes to be booked.
Nunes’ card was the last leg to come in, with the Portuguese picking up a yellow in the 80th minute to pocket the punter £6000 from his £10 wager.
Remember, these bets are really fun bets. Wins like this are rare, so always bet responsibly and never risk silly amounts of money you can’t afford to lose.
FAQs about bet builders
Still not sure how a bet builder works? What feels obvious to seasoned punters can be confusing if you’re new to betting, so we’ve put together an FAQ section to help clear things up.
1. Are bet builders available on mobile betting apps?
Yes, all major bookmakers in the UK offer bet builders on their mobile apps. The idea is to make the bets as easy to place as possible, so not only do they offer the bet, they often make it front and centre of their match coverage.
2. What are the best bet builder sites in the UK?
We have plenty of options available here at The Sun. Our personal favourites include bet365, Betway, SBK and Betfred. All offer differing and alternative variations of the bet, giving our readers more options when they are looking for the best bet builder betting sites.
3. Which sites have the best odds for bet builders?
SBK tends to have some of the best odds for general football betting thanks to their betting exchange pricing – this also extends to their odds for bet builders. The majority of the sites in our top ten also offer regular boosted odds on pre-built bet builders.
4. Are there restrictions on sports you can include in bet builders?
Some bookies do restrict bet builders just to football. Afterall, that is the sport they were created for. But bet builders have extended into other sports like NFL, NHL, NBA and tennis. As the bet is extremely popular and constantly evolving, don’t be surprised to see it become available on more sports in time.
5. Do bet builder sites offer bonuses or promotions?
Yes, bet builder sites do offer bonuses and promotions. These can include general promotions like free bets for new and existing customers as well as boosted odds. They will also offer regular bet builder bonuses like insurance if one leg lets you down, or it could be free bet builder bets to the same value as the one you placed on a specific football match.
6. Can you cash out a bet builder early?
Yes and no. Basically, it depends on the bookie. Some will let you cash out a bet builder, others won’t. In general, the best bet builder sites we have covered here at The Sun let you cash out your bet builder, but it’s always best to check first if you think this is something you might want to do.
