About the Apprenticeship Programme
The Barloworld Equipment Apprenticeship Programme provides aspiring artisans with structured training in Heavy Earthmoving Mechanics, preparing them to become qualified and competent professionals in the heavy equipment industry.
This programme combines theoretical classroom learning and practical, hands-on workplace training, ensuring that participants gain a solid foundation in mechanical systems, diagnostics, and repair techniques.
Key Responsibilities
Apprentices will be expected to:
- Successfully complete all theoretical learning, practical training, and skills assessments.
- Apply the knowledge and skills acquired in real-world workplace scenarios.
- Maintain accurate documentation for experience building (logbooks and training records).
- Ensure a safe working environment in line with company policies and procedures.
- Meet individual performance targets (KPIs and balanced scorecard).
- Report accurately on tasks completed, including related administration and documentation.
- Contribute to productivity, cost control, safety, quality, and risk management.
- Assist or support senior machinists with projects and perform basic machining operations such as turning, milling, drilling, and tapping.
- Adhere to the General Machinery Regulations Act and other safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
To qualify for the apprenticeship, applicants must have one of the following qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric with N3 Mathematics and Physical Science, or Foundational Learning Certificate (FLT)
OR - N2 or higher with subjects including:
- Mathematics
- Science
- Mechanical Trade Theory
- Technical Drawings
OR
- NCV Level 4 with:
- Mathematics
- Physical Science
- Industrial Science
- Mechanical Trade Theory
- Technical Drawings and/or Electrical Trade Theory
Other Requirements:
- Valid Code B Driver’s Licence (must be obtained before the trade test)
- Strong analytical and technical reasoning ability
- Good numerical reasoning and spatial visualisation skills
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities
