Thomas Tuchel desperate for more English players in Premier League as numbers worryingly hit record low

THOMAS TUCHEL is desperate for more English players to feature in the Prem as numbers have hit a record low.

Less than a QUARTER of starters in top-flight matches so far this season were eligible to play for his Three Lions.

The shock 23.2 per cent figure is a huge drop from Gareth Southgate’s reign when it was between 30 and 33 per cent — then an all-time low compared to previous years.

Asked about the record-breaking statistic, England chief Tuchel said: “I am now aware. I would love to see more English players.

“The more, the better, but I come from club football and know that no one is holding anyone back.

“If anyone deserves to play, they will play, so they have to fight for their place and they will. Quality will always find a way.”

Previous boss Southgate had often voiced concerns at having to pick from a decreasing pool of talent  — and it is seemingly getting worse.

Ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier in Latvia, Tuchel pointed out  he does have major players starring in other countries.

But even if they were featuring in the Prem, the overall figure would still be embarrassingly low.

The German said: “Don’t forget we’ve Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in foreign leagues. We have  influential players in France, too.

“We have enough players to compete at a high level.”

Tuchel, whose team beat Wales 3-0 on Thursday, still has some selection issues though as he left Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish out of this current squad.

Standing by that, he added: “I’m still convinced the guys in the last camp deserve to be in this one.

“They put out another great display against Wales — but the door is always open for anyone.

Scammer who lied about finding fly in chocolate to bag refunds caught after chocolatiers turn detective

CHOCOLATE-makers turned detective to nail a scammer who lied about finding an insect in her online orders to claim refunds.

Dozens realised they had been tricked when chocolatier Geri Martin, 46, told an online forum she was nearly fooled.

Geri twigged that the woman had never placed an order with her.

Scores of people replied to say they had been scammed too.

Clare Cook, 43, repaid £37 after the woman, who we are not naming, sent a pic of a fruit fly in a box.

Clare, of Thanet, Kent, said: “I was mortified and checking all hygiene processes.”

Another maker, sent a photo of a bug on a menu card, shut down over cleanliness fears.

Other businesses say the woman smashed chocs then said they arrived broken in a bid for cash.

Chrissie Fadipe, who runs the forum, traced the woman online and phoned her. Action Fraud was also alerted.

Chrissie, 45, of March, Cambs, said: “She admitted scamming people and tried to blame it on being depressed.

“But she didn’t stop to think about the chocolatiers’ mental health. It’s such a malicious thing to do.”

Chrissie says the woman, a single mum from Surrey, started the con after legitimately finding a fly in one box.

She told Chrissie: “I feel terrible. It’s disgusting behaviour.”

She offered to send letters of apology and refunds to those she conned.

Starmer’s handling of China spying case has shown our enemies that we are ready to roll over

China crisis

WHEN Keir Starmer told us wealth creation was his number one priority, we didn’t expect it to be at the expense of national security.

But that is the conclusion many will draw from the failure to prosecute two men accused of spying for China from the heart of Westminster.

The case collapsed after the Government refused to provide evidence in court that the Communist regime posed a potential threat to Britain.

It says everything about Sir Keir’s spineless administration that it lacks the balls to state the blindingly obvious.

Security chiefs have been warning for some time that Beijing is engaged in a relentless and prolific campaign of espionage against us.

In 2023, MI5 boss Sir Ken McCallum raised the alarm over “epic” efforts to recruit 20,000 spies in the UK.

Yet China is so deeply embedded in Britain’s infrastructure — with stakes in everything from nuclear power to universities — that we are afraid to brand it an enemy in case it takes economic revenge.

A former diplomat who was due to give evidence at the trial says he perceived “a desire not to offend China”.

In doing so, Labour has dealt a blow to justice and national security by showing our enemies that we are ready to roll over.

To many, it will look like a free rein to spy on us at will.

The PM has still not got his story straight on what actually happened.

He must address MPs and clear up this whole sorry mess when Parliament returns.

Win for speech

SETTING fire to a copy of the Koran may be stupid and highly offensive, but a judge ruled yesterday that it is not a crime.

In overturning Hamit Coskun’s conviction, Mr Justice Bennathan struck a blow for freedom of expression.

He made it clear it is not for the state to intervene when we exercise our “precious right” to express our views, even if they upset, offend or shock.

Let’s hope police chiefs take note — and cease sending officers to tick off law-abiding citizens who speak their mind.

Caring Wills

PRINCE William’s tears did more to raise awareness of suicide prevention than anything he could have said.

His emotional response to meeting a woman whose husband took his own life instantly cut through all the words that have been written on the subject.

Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK or Ireland dies in this way and one in four people admits to having had suicidal thoughts.

Often the best way to help those who contemplate ending their life is to show them you care.

It’s clear that William does.
