The formula to a successful long-distance relationship for students revealed

THE formula to a successful long-distance relationship for students has been revealed.

Mathematician Bobby Seagull used data from a sample of 1,000 18-30-year-olds who were in a long-distance relationship while at University and calculated key factors based on what they think the secret to a successful long-distance love is.

It’s a tough time for student couples at the moment[/caption]

He’s taken into account how many miles they spend travelling to see each other (m), how many texts are exchanged (t), the number of calls (c) as well as the amount of time they confess their love (l).

The weighted formula reflects the effort put in by a couple (top line numerator of the equation) against the challenges (bottom line denominator of the equation).

And the higher your Long-Distance Love index, the more likely your relationship will succeed.

Sarah Rosier, customer experience director for National Express, which commissioned the formula, said: “This autumn has seen high school sweethearts parting ways and going to separate universities.

“So, we wanted to find the perfect formula to help them stay together.

“Maintaining a long-distance relationship isn’t easy, particularly when you’re also studying and living that lifestyle as well.”

Top 10 keys to happiness in a long Distance relationship

1. Staying positive
2. Supporting each other’s ambitions
3. Sharing daily updates
4. Being open about the challenges
5. Planning visits in advance to have something to look forward to
6. Talking about the future
7. Remembering the long-distance won’t be forever
8. Plenty of video calls
9. Relishing the time when you’re together
10. Having a constant flow of texts

The formula comes after research of 1,000 adults aged 18-30 who are or were in a long-distance relationship while studying found they typically only saw their partners three times per month.

And they had to travel an average of 171.3 miles to do so.

As a result, every month costs these couples almost £170 in travel costs, moving between destinations to catch up with their loved one.

But 85 per cent reckon they would have seen – or would see their long-distance love more if there were more affordable travel options.

The majority of these journeys were completed by train (72 per cent), although 30 per cent would drive and 27 per cent would catch a succession of local buses.

Sarah added: “Our research shows that it’s clear that the cost of a long-distance relationship can cause friction.

“Constant train travel can really add up, which is why hopping on a coach between cities is often far more affordable.

“With hundreds of frequent coaches serving destinations across the UK, it means students have one less thing to worry about and can make the most of their budget while spending precious time with their long-distance loves.”

Every day, the typical respondent sent their other half a whopping 68 messages and would speak with them on the phone four times.

And they’d end up skipping four-and-a-half days’ worth of lectures or classes because they were away visiting their long-distance love.

But the research, carried out via OnePoll, found 72 per cent said their long-distance relationship has worked out and they’re still together.

According to those involved in long-distance relationships at university, the secrets of success when it comes to love, were deemed to be calls every day (69 per cent), a constant stream of texts (61 per cent) – and the knowledge that the separation isn’t permanent (62 per cent).

While top tips to staying happy included keeping positivity levels up (53 per cent), supporting each other’s ambitions (47 per cent) and sharing daily updates (44 per cent).

Bobby Seagull added: “It was great working with National Express to put together this formula to help long-distance loves stay together while they are at university.

“If they stick to the numbers there is a high chance they can make this work.”

Long-distance Love Index

v = visits per month (2.84)
mₙ = normalised miles travelled (actual ÷ “too far” threshold): 171 ÷ 256 ≈ 0.67
t = daily messages (68)
c = daily calls (4.08)
l = daily “I love you”s (7.54)
r = resilience factor (e.g. proportion who agree long-distance makes them appreciate time together: 86% = 0.86)
d = distance difficulty (cost & travel barrier proxy e.g. monthly spend £168 ÷ £277 threshold ≈ 0.61)
s = stress factor (proportion who found it expensive & said it nearly broke them up: 0.68 × 0.44 ≈ 0.30)

If your relationship scores over 300 on the Long-Distance Love index, your chances of success are high (72 per cent of students say their long-distance relationship did work out)

Claire Sweeney, who had an eight-month relationship with Ricky last year, appeared emotional as she attended the service today.

After the icon’s death, Claire wrote a touching tribute which read: “I’ve needed a few days to process the devastating news about my dear friend Ricky.

“My thoughts are with his family especially his children Campbell, Millie Fearne and Lyla, his granddaughter.

“To them, Speaky and to all his friends who loved him so deeply and for so many years I send you my deepest sympathy.

“Ricky, you were the people’s champ. We adored and cherished you. Love you always.”

Hatton and Coronation Street star Claire appeared on Dancing On Ice together in 2024 and began secretly dating after the show.

The pair had been friends for 25 years before things became romantic.

The couple initially dated in secret and enjoyed a holiday to Tenerife together before going public with their romance.

However, it wasn’t to last and in December 2024 it was reported that their romance had ended after eight months together.

Following the split Claire said: “We’re still friends, we were friends.

“We dated and now we’re friends again. It’s all good.”

Before Ricky’s tragic death, Claire had cheered on his comeback to boxing with a heartfelt message.

The actress shared a video announcing the 46-year-old’s return to the sport.

“This is brilliant”, she captioned it.

Ricky was sadly found dead at his home in Manchester on Sunday, September 14.

Tyson Fury, Liam Gallagher and the Rooneys are leading mourners at Ricky Hatton’s funeral as the procession finishes its route through Manchester today.

Thousands of fans were spotted lining the streets as the boxing icon made his final journey through his home city today.

The Gypsy King, 37, was flanked by boxing royalty, including Tony Bellew and Frazer Clarke, as they piled into the venue.

The star-studded line up also featured former cricketer Freddie Flintoff, soap star Bruce Jones and TV personality Calum Best.

The funeral procession started at 9.45am today, outside his local pub, the Cheshire Cheese, near his home in Hyde.

A Reliant Regal – as seen in Only Fools and Horses – led the procession in honour of Ricky’s extensive memorabilia collection.

The former world champion was a mega fan of the popular sitcom and once bought one of the original three-wheelers for £4,000.

Ricky’s brother, Matthew, was spotted travelling with the cortege, which was trailed by floral tributes reading ‘Hitman’.

Ricky then passed his gym and the AO Arena on his final journey, before reaching Manchester Cathedral at midday.

A memorial service will now take place at the cathedral, with legions of fans set to lining the streets outside in a show of support.

It will come to an end at the Etihad Stadium – the home of Ricky’s beloved football team, Manchester City.

The 46-year-old British boxing legend was tragically discovered dead at his home on September 14.

Paul Speak, his manager and close pal, found the boxing star’s body after checking on him when he didn’t show for a boxing event.

On Wednesday, Ricky’s son Campbell posted a heartbreaking tribute on what would have been his dad’s 47th birthday.

Campbell, who followed in his dad’s footsteps by becoming a pro boxer, told how his father’s death left the family “knocked for six”.

Ricky was awarded an MBE in 2007 and had worked as a boxing promoter and trainer since hanging up his gloves.

During his glittering 15-year career, Ricky won four world titles at both light-welterweight and welterweight.

After trading blows with some of history’s greatest fighters, he will be remembered as one of the greatest UK boxers of his generation.

Brit OnlyFans model who admitted trying to smuggle nearly £200,000 worth of Thai drugs into Spain learns her fate

A BRITISH OnlyFans model has been jailed for three years after admitting trying to smuggle almost £200,000 worth of Thai drugs into Spain.

Glamorous Clara Wilson, from Huthwaite, Notts, was arrested at Barcelona’s El Prat airport after travelling from Thailand with more than 34 kilos of cannabis in her suitcase.

The 36-year-old was remanded to a local jail by an investigating judge and learned in March prosecutors wanted to cage her for four years and be fined more than £750,000.

The Sun has now learned Wilson admitted to wrongdoing as part of a plea bargain deal in exchange for a more lenient punishment ahead of her full trial.

Clara, one of a string of young British women to fall foul of the law in airport drug busts in recent months, accepted a three-year prison sentence and a fine matching the estimated  £185,000 value of the cannabis she tried to smuggle into Spain.

Her defence lawyer Yaiza Garcia told Barcelona’s Criminal Court she wanted the sentence suspended, but a state prosecutor opposed the application and a decision was put off to a later date.

Wilson was arrested at the Catalan capital’s El Prat airport as she got off a flight from Bangkok.

Police held her after finding 60-vacuum packed packages containing a green-coloured substance weighing 34,074 grams that tested positive for marijuana.

Public prosecutors said in an indictment drafted before her trial: “The drugs were transported by the accused with the intention of selling it to third parties on the black market where its value would have been EUROS 213,991.”

The Brit model, who goes by Kardi Cee online, has been warned she will be jailed for another two months if she fails to pay her six-figure fine.

The time she has already served in Brians 1 Prison near Barcelona would be taken into account in determining her extra jail time after sentence.

Last month it emerged teenage drug mule suspect Bella Culley’s family face a huge £100,000 fine to buy her freedom from a grim ex-Soviet jail.

The 19-year-old sparked a massive international search operation in early May after she was reported missing while she was believed to be holidaying in Thailand.

It was later revealed that Bella, from Billingham, Co Durham, had been arrested 4,000 miles away in Georgia after allegedly carrying 14kg of cannabis into the ex-Soviet nation and could be facing 20 years behind bars.

At the start of September it was reported her lawyer was close to clinching a deal which would enable her to walk free – provided her family stumps up a huge payout estimated to be around £100,000.

Bella – who fell pregnant on the disastrous backpacking trip – claims she was forced into trafficking by a Thai gang which branded her with an iron and showed her beheading videos.

Charlotte Lee May, 21, a former cabin attendant from south London, remains in custody in Sri Lanka after being arrested in May with 46kg of cannabis she allegedly attempted to smuggle into the country on a flight from Thailand.

Last month a British tourist travelling from Benidorm to Ibiza was arrested after police discovered nearly £300,000 worth of cocaine in his car.

The 27-year-old was apprehended after trying to board a ferry from the Costa Blanca resort of Denia to the Balearic island.

Cops said he reacted to an initial stop by handing them a bottle with a small amount of cannabis resin inside in an apparent attempt to throw them off the scent.

They discovered the seven kilos of cocaine during a full search in the storage compartment between the two front seats.

Video footage of the drug discovery released by the Civil Guard showed an officer hauling the narcotics which had a lizard logo on them out of the ‘hidden compartment’ and the Brit being taken away in handcuffs in a t-shirt and shorts.

Well-placed sources said at the time the cocaine had a potential street value of around £ 280,000 and would have fetched a higher price in Ibiza than on the Spanish mainland.

The Sun has reached out to Wilson’s lawyer for comment.
