Age you can legally leave children at home alone in England as summer holidays approach

SUMMER holidays are just around the corner, it’s best to be prepared, including knowing how long kids can stay home alone.

It can be hard for parents who are working or have errands to run during the holidays to always find care for their children.

There is no legal age, but you can get into trouble for leaving kids at home if it puts them at risk[/caption]

Even nipping to the shops quickly can tough with kids, but leaving them at home could lead to trouble for the parents.

So the question is – at what age can you legally leave children at home on their own in England?

Currently, there is no law to say what age when you can leave a child on their own, but it is a criminal offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk.

You can be fined or sent to jail if caught.

This is because it is a crime to leave a child unsupervised “in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health“.

The government recommends parents use their own judgement on how mature their child is before leaving them alone, whether it’s at home or in a car.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) gives a more comprehensive guide.

“Every child matures differently, so it would be almost impossible to have a ‘one size fits all’ law,” it says on its website.

The NSPCC recommends children under the age of 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time.

Children under 16 years of age should not be left alone in a property overnight.

In addition, babies, toddlers and very young children should never be left alone.

The NPCC’s Helen Westerman went into greater detail and said parents needed to take into consideration a couple of critical factors.

This includes how they feel about their children playing outside unsupervised, and also how their child feels about it themselves.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

HELEN has said that parents should consider these six things if they are deciding to leave their child home alone.

 1. Are they prepared to be left home alone? – Think about how your child would handle an emergency situation if they are home alone. Helen says: “Think about if they can deal with risks, will they behave responsibly, will they be safe?”

2. Undertake prudent measures – Think about the key steps that you would need to take to make sure your child has everything they need, like spare keys and access to food and a bathroom.

3. Never leave babies or toddlers on their own

4. Be in the know about their unsupervised outings – When your child is out on their own, make sure you know where they are going, who they are with, what they are doing and how far they’re travelling.

5. Share essential contact info – Helen says: “Make sure they know a trusted adult’s full name and address, and have two trusted adults’ phone numbers.”

6. Prepare your child – Make sure your child knows how to handle different situations. Helen advises: “Ask them what they’d do if they hurt themselves or if a stranger knocks on the door.”

“Lots of parents will be thinking about whether it’s safe to leave their children at home safely, and if they’re old enough to leave the house unsupervised,” she told the Liverpool Echo.

“As well as determining if a child is ready to be left alone, many parents will also find balancing work with the school break quite challenging, especially considering the rising child costs and the cost of living crisis, which is placing additional strain on families.”

Helen added: “As children get older, it’s common for them to want more freedom and learn to be independent.

“This is an important part of growing up, but we know there can be a lot to think about for parents.

“As every child is different, we recommend building up their independence at their pace and checking in with them to make sure they feel safe.”

KYLIE Jenner looked incredible in a skintight silver mini-dress, as she stepped out for a friend’s birthday party in LA.

It comes just days after reality star Kylie, 27, finally revealed details of her cosmetic surgery.

The Kardashians star looked incredible in the skintight dress that showed off her boob job.

The make-up mogul pulled out all the stops for her friend’s birthday at The Nice Guy in LA.

Stepping out in the silver dress, Kylie made sure to turn heads.

The sexy outfit clung to her curves in all the right places, and showed off her shapely bum and toned legs.

She wore her trademark raven hair flowing down her back, and kept her make-up subtle and dewy.

SURGERY SECRETS

The sexy dress showed off the results of her boob job.

Just days ago Kylie finally spilled the beans on the size of implants and who performed the surgery.

The admission was in response to influencer Rachel Leary, who had praised her chest as “the most perfect, natural boob job ever” and begged for specifics.

Last week Rachel uploaded a video asking Kylie to share what she “asked for” when getting her breasts done.

She captioned it: “Help a girl out @Kylie Jenner, I just want to know how to get them to sit like that, respectfully.”

To the surprise of many, the beauty mogul replied directly to the clip, writing: “445 cc, moderate profile, half under the muscle!!!!! silicone!!! garth fisher!!! hope this helps lol.”

The TikTok exchange comes two years after Kylie first confirmed she had undergone a secret breast augmentation at 19 – something she denied for years.

Kylie’s surgeon, Dr. Garth Fisher, is a well-known celebrity doctor and is a longtime favourite of the Kardashian-Jenner clan.

He performed Kris Jenner’s facelift on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, gave Kourtney Kardashian her boob job, and even carried out a revision facelift for Caitlyn Jenner pre-transition.

Kylie first confirmed her surgery in a 2023 episode of The Kardashians, revealing she had the procedure done before giving birth to daughter Stormi, now seven.

She told Stassie Karanikolaou: “I got my breasts done before Stormi. Within six months of having Stormi – not thinking I would have a child when I was 20 – they were still healing.”

She admitted she regretted the decision, adding:
“I had beautiful breasts, like natural t*ts, just gorgeous… and I just wished, obviously, I never got them done to begin with.”

“I would recommend anyone who was thinking about it to wait until after you have children. I have a daughter too. I would be heartbroken if she wanted to get her body done at 19.”

Kylie’s latest comments marked a major shift from years of denying surgery rumours.

In 2015, the influencer denied breast enhancement on her app, attributing her changing shape to weight gain and ageing.

Harvey Elliott admits ‘conversation’ needs to be had over Liverpool future to avoid ‘wasting’ career on the bench

HARVEY ELLIOTT has warned Arne Slot he won’t “waste” his career and watch from the bench at Liverpool.

The attacker, 22, collected a Premier League title medal this term at Anfield but played just 360 minutes across 18 appearances.

The boyhood Reds fan is in Slovakia as part of the England U21 squad looking to defend their European Championship crown for what could be the start of a big summer.

A host of clubs are considering making a move for the £45m-rated ex-Fulham man and he admitted he may have to leave for the good of his career.

Elliott said: “It’s just a situation that me and the team on my behalf have to have a conversation about.

“I’m coming into an age now where I’m 22, I’m going to be 23 next season and I don’t really want to be wasting years on my career because it’s a short career. You don’t know what’s going to happen. Touch wood it doesn’t, but injuries and things, it could shorten it.

“It’s a situation that, as I’ve said before, I need to reflect. I need to see if I’m content in doing what I’m doing and how can I improve as a player because that’s the most important thing. That’s the main thing, really.

“I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself and the best player I can be. If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision that I’m going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.”

Elliott, who came through QPR’s academy before making the move to Fulham prior to being snapped up by Liverpool in 2019, added: “Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But as I said, most importantly, it’s just about what’s best for my career. I just need to make that decision.”

One of the highlights of Elliott’s campaign, which was delayed due to a fractured foot, came in the Champions League.

He scored a last-ditch winner at Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 first leg just 47 seconds after replacing Mohamed Salah, but even that moment failed to convince Slot to hand him a start in the next game.

He said: “PSG was kind of a high for me, especially with the Premier League game coming up a few days later. I thought maybe it was an opportunity for me to get a start and to showcase what I can do and just get a nice run out.

“The boss is the boss. He’s the man in charge. He’s the reason why we’ve won the league, because of his decisions. I can’t complain. I just need to make sure I’m ready and to keep going.”

One man who does have total faith in Elliott is Lee Carsley, the man he enjoyed Euro success with two years ago.

Elliott and Charlie Cresswell are the only survivors from that squad in Slovakia and the Liverpool man says he is loving the leadership role he has.

He added: “I’ve always taken that role in my stride. Not only for myself, I want the whole team to do well. I want all the players to do well.

“Everyone’s got quality here. We have one aim and one goal, which is to win it. I’ll try as hard as I can to make sure that happens.”

England kick-off their Euro campaign against the Czech Republic on Thursday and then face Slovenia three days later and finish the group stage against Germany on Wednesday 18 June.

All of the Young Lions’ matches are being broadcast on Channel 4.
