Ancient Roman shipwreck found underwater at hols hotspot as divers find treasure on boat sunk in storm

AN ANCIENT Roman ship downed by a storm has been found centuries later at a holiday hotspot – and there’s even treasure on board.

The 2,000-year-old discovery was made mere metres from a popular beachfront – and baffled researchers claim the ship is still in great condition.

The archaeological sensation was unearthed along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia this month, almost two millennia after it sunk.

Its timbers even “look like they were just carved”, according to the gobsmacked research team.

Divers suspected there might be a wreck at the Roman port of Barbir after discovering an antique plank with a metal nail in 2020.

Five years later, the entire 42-foot vessel has now been revealed, along with a haul of ancient coins.

One of them even included the ancient Roman emperor, Trajan.

The incredible shipwreck lies in the village of Sukošan just a few miles south of Zadar, one of Croatia’s biggest tourist destinations.

The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology, which led the excavation, said the ship was likely lost in a storm.

Director Mladen Pešić said: “As the evidence shows us, the ship was docked in the harbour.

“It was found just in front of the pier, so we suppose that due to the bad weather the ropes could be broken and the ship might have hit the shore.”

He added: “Broken stern elements give us evidence of this, since this beam that belongs to the keel was split like it hit a hard surface.

“The ship was probably in such bad condition that the owners decided to leave it on the bottom of the harbour.”

Radiocarbon analysis dates the ship to the first or second century AD – roughly the period of Trajan’s reign.

And though the ship was damaged enough to sink, it is in surprisingly good condition for its age.

Dr Pešić said: “The preserved ship was almost 13 meters in length and 3.5m in width.

“Many different elements were preserved – keel, planks, frames, ceilings, and many elements of the ship’s upper construction.”

He continued: “It is quite well preserved; some of the planks and frames look like they were just carved.”

The construction of the vessel suggests it was built to carry heavy loads over medium-to-long distances.

Researchers detailed the treasure found on board[/caption]

And the artefacts found on board point to the same conclusion.

Dr Pešić said there were many shards of “pottery, glass, and other archaeological material” that could be connected with ship and the port.

“Most interesting are two complete jugs that were part of the ship’s equipment,” he explained.

“As we found many olive pits on it, we suppose that at the moment of sinking, the ship was transporting olives for further processing or for sale.”

The ship will now be preserved in-situ, being covered with a protective geotextile membrane and reburied in the sand.

But a recreation of the ship is planned for public display.

Dr Pešić said: “The plan is to make a 1:10 scale reconstruction of the existing ship construction in order to make a predictive model of ship how it looked in Roman times.”

Excavation of the ship was the work of a multinational team, including experts from Croatia, France, Poland, Germany, and the UK.

Jose Mourinho booted Man Utd flop out of training and text him every single night telling him to leave

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN has lifted the lid on the explosive row with Jose Mourinho that led to the end of his Manchester United career.

The Armenian, now 36, played for the Red Devils between 2016 and 2018.

Despite being one of Mourinho’s first signings at Old Trafford, the Portuguese never appeared to rate the winger.

Mkhitaryan went on to leave Old Trafford after just 18 months, joining Arsenal in a blockbuster swap deal for Alexis Sanchez.

In his new book, released in Italy, the Inter Milan star has detailed his astonishing final months at United.

He wrote of Mourinho: “I told him, you’ve been criticising me for a year-and-a-half now, ever since I arrived at Manchester United.

“Mourinho told me I was ‘s***’ and I just lost my temper. ‘You are the s***. An enormous one.’

“Mou replied: ‘Get out of here, I never want to see you again.’

“During the training sessions, the coach said nothing to me, he remained at a religious level of silence, but every evening he’d send me a message via WhatsApp. ‘Miki, leave, please.’

“The situation had become grotesque. I’d reply every time with the same copy and paste response. I will leave if I find the right team, otherwise I’ll wait for the summer.

“Towards the middle of January, the text changed slightly. ‘Miki, please leave, that way I can get Alexis Sanchez.’

Mino Raiola was working on this exchange with Arsenal. So my response mutated too. ‘I am not leaving just to do you a favour, and please stop writing to me. If you want, talk to Mino.’”

Mkhitaryan went on to joke: “And everyone lived happily ever after.”

Sanchez, now 36, would be an unmitigated disaster at Old Trafford.

The Chilean scored just five goals in 45 appearances for the Red Devils, looking a shadow of his former self.

Mkhitaryan didn’t pull up any trees at Arsenal either, making 59 appearances for the Gunners as they came fifth in the 2018-19 season.

He eventually left for Roma, initially on loan, in September 2019.

Ironically he reunited with Mourinho in the Eternal City when the veteran boss took charge at the Stadio Olimpico in 2021.

The pair initially hashed out their differences, with Mourinho saying in 2022: “The thing that makes me happy, in the beginning people go for a negative, and they were trying to say ‘Mkhitaryan with Jose has no chance, Jose is the kind of the guy that when things go wrong they never go well again’.

“It has been proven the opposite, we were very mature, very honest with each other.”

Mourinho went on to add: “I’m so happy with him and I’m happy with people understanding with me everything is not black and white.”

Mkhitaryan signed for Inter Milan on a free transfer later that year, reportedly leaving his former boss “furious”.

The versatile wide man has so far made 154 appearances for the Nerazzurri, and remains a regular this season.

Ironically he played with the man he was once swapped for at San Siro, with Alexis Sanchez also turning out for Inter during the 2023-24 season.

England player ratings: Elliott Anderson already part of Three Lions furniture as Morgan Rogers back to brilliant best

ENGLAND cruised to victory in a heated international friendly at Wembley.

Tensions had built up heading into the game, but ultimately it was a walk in the park for an England side that has at times lacked cutting edge in recent fixtures.

The Aston Villa man was a standout at Wembley[/caption]

The Lions rushed into an early lead thanks to a third-minute finish from Morgan Rogers, before his Aston Villa teammate Ollie Watkins doubled the advantage eight minutes later.

Bukayo Saka fired home a sublime effort from range at the turn of the 20 minute mark to put the hosts firmly in control, and they never looked back.

Here is how SunSport’s Tom Barclay rated Thomas Tuchel’s men:

Jordan Pickford: 7

Picked up a record-breaking eighth consecutive clean sheet, which took him past the great Gordon Banks.

Was a bystander in the first half, but came up with two top saves, one with his knee and the other with a punch, after the break to ensure the shut-out.

And he also made a brilliant save to keep out Chris Mepham’s header.

Djed Spence: 7

Made his full England debut and coped well enough.

Spence is by trade a right-back but has often performed better at left-back for Spurs, and the latter role was where he was deployed here.

Was up against his Tottenham team-mate Brennan Johnson but kept him quiet, though the versatile full-back did pick up a late caution.

With all of the injury issues at left-back, Spence has a chance now to keep hold of the shirt.

Marc Guehi: 8

Fantastic work from the Crystal Palace skipper to keep the ball in play for England’s opener.

Stones’ header from Declan Rice’s corner looked to be going out of play but Guehi bust a gut to keep it on, got his head up and picked out Morgan Rogers to make the breakthrough.

Took one for the team by clattering Kieffer Moore when it looked like Wales might mount a rare attack and was booked.

John Stones: 7

Admitted he considered retiring last season due to consistent fitness issues – but his love for England played a part in stopping him from going through with it.

It is a good thing too because Stones, who earned his 84th cap here, remains still so crucial to the Three Lions.

He showed good anticipation at times here and also put his battered body on the line, being flattened by big Kieffer Moore in the second half.

Ezri Konsa: 7

Filled in at right-back after Reece James pulled out through injury and did not look out of place.

Even got an assist for his troubles too, although his lay-off for Bukayo Saka was hardly the stand-out moment from the Arsenal man’s blistering strike for England’s third.

Declan Rice: 7

Captain in Harry Kane’s absence on what was his 69th cap.

Rice’s corners caused Wales problems all night and prompted the early goal rush, as Guehi kept the Arsenal man’s routine alive for the opener.

An exciting midfield partnership with Anderson is blossoming.

Elliot Anderson: 8

It is remarkable how quickly he has become part of the furniture for England.

This was only his third appearance but he looked in complete control in midfield, almost teeing up Ollie Watkins for a second.

Thomas Tuchel clearly wants more, though, as at one point he was seen urging the Nottingham Forest man to get the ball forward quicker.

Morgan Rogers: 8

Playing No. 10 in the absence of old mates Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer, Rogers seized his opportunity with an early goal and assist.

His maiden strike for England came on three minutes, tapping home Guehi’s cutback, before he turned provider by floating in a cross which Watkins converted. Also hit the bar.

Anthony Gordon: 7

The Newcastle star had fans off their seats and ooohing with glee as he skinned David Brooks with a neat turn moments before Saka made it three.

Showed more of what he is really capable of compared to the “50 per cent” Gordon himself claimed he had shown hitherto in an England shirt.

Moved into a centre-forward position after the break when Watkins went off.

Bukayo Saka: 8

Arsenal’s talisman conjured up the pre-assist for England’s second, floating in a cross which Rogers took down before teeing up Watkins to fire in from close range.

Saka then took centre-stage by cutting in and curling home a crowd-pleasing third which had supporters in raptures.

Ollie Watkins: 7

Another attacking understudy who took his chance while the main man sat this one out.

Injured Kane watched on as Aston Villa man Watkins – who famously scored the last-gasp winner in the Euros semi-final against the Netherlands – was Johnny on the spot to put away Rogers’ cross on 11 minutes.

There were initial fears Watkins may have suffered some serious damage when lunging for an Anderson cross.

Fortunately it was just a scare and he carried on until half-time, when he was replaced by former Villa team-mate Marcus Rashford.

SUBS:

Marcus Rashford (for Watkins 46): 6

His introduction saw Gordon move up front but neither had much impact from there, so they switched round again for the final 15.

Morgan Gibbs White (for Rodgers 70): 6

Slotted in at No. 10 but did not have the same creative influence as the man he replaced.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Rice 70): 6

Came on for his first England appearance in seven years, adding some physicality to the midfield

Jordan Henderson (for Anderson 70): 6

Came on for his 86th cap to see the game out and was a commanding presence.

Jarrod Bowen (for Saka 70): 6

Offered an outlet wide right at every opportunity.

Myles Lewis Skelly (for Stones 80): 7

Would have had an assist if Gordon had converted after a neat one-two.
