Wilson opens up on wife’s surgery and ‘torrid time’ as Murphy deals ‘shuddering, embarrassing halt’ to title defence

FOR KYREN WILSON, it will go down as one of the worst defeats of his professional career.

His time as the defending champion of the Xi’an Grand Prix was brought to a shuddering, embarrassing halt today by Shaun Murphy in the last 16 of the 2025 tournament.

Kyren Wilson of England chalks his cue.

The Magician won 5-0, scoring 533 points in a row, with Wilson not potting a single ball in response.

Had a few extra balls gone in, then Murphy could have surpassed the world record of 556 unanswered points set by Ronnie O’Sullivan against Ricky Walden at the 2014 Masters.

There will not have been many times since he turned down pro 15 years ago that Wilson, one of the best players of his generation, will have sat in his chair for such long periods and failed to record a solitary point.

It was a result that sent shockwaves across the sport though Murphy, 43, should be commended for how well he played at Qujiang Sports Complex on Friday.

In truth, Wilson did not do much wrong, while Murphy “pretty much played as good as I have ever played, one of the best best-of-nine (frames) matches I’ve ever been a part of”.

Wilson, ten years younger than Murphy, is ranked second in the world behind Judd Trump but a lot of his money is the £500,000 he collected for being world snooker champion in May 2024 – and that dosh will come off next April.

On the one-year list, a true reflection of recent form, he is 16th with just £57,000 next to his name

There was a surprise 4-2 defeat to 19-year-old Stan Moody in the second round of the British Open last month in Cheltenham.

Prior to that he was beaten by the same scoreline by Robbie Williams in his first match of the English Open in Brentwood.

And he also failed to make any inroads at the Wuhan Open where his campaign was stopped by Irishman Aaron Hill.

Three guys that Wilson would be expected to eliminate easily and with little fuss, particularly when his head is in the right space.

Apart from winning the Shanghai Masters in early August, which added £210,000 to his bank balance but carried no ranking points, it has been a “torrid” start to the season.

Potential burnout is one issue – last year, as the reigning world champion, he entered pretty much every event, which is commendable, as he wanted to be a good ambassador for the sport.

Yet it came at a cost and come the 2025 World Championship, he became another victim of the Crucible Curse, losing to debutant Lei Peifan on day one, as he was cooked.

There is more strength-in-depth in the sport these days and the top players, as Trump is finding out, can be humbled if they are not fully focused on their next opponent.

It highlights just how well the Class of 92 have done – O’Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Williams – to still be this competitive while entering their sixth decades.

Wilson is an honest bloke and will not sugarcoat this with his brother Taylor when they analyse what they can do to get him out of this current slump.

After the Murphy loss, Taylor said: “Credit where credit is due. That was snooker from the gods. That form deserves trophies.”

A proud family man, the father-of-two has had issues back home in Kettering which have understandably meant he has taken his eye off the snooker ball.

Only a few days ago he revealed that his wife Sophie had had surgery in the UK while he was playing in China.

Though he has not used this as an excuse for his poor form, the trouble at home has coincided with his worst start to a campaign for years.

Wilson – who had been eating this week at a Xi’an barbeque restaurant called Sophie in the hope of bringing himself some good luck – said: “I’ve had a bit of a torrid time off the table.

“My wife’s been very poorly. I’ve not really played snooker for the best part of four or five weeks now.

“She’s coming up to six weeks of recovery this week.

“My snooker, I feel like it’s slowly coming back. I’ve started to put a bit more time in. I can focus a bit more on my game.

“As a result, hopefully you’ll start seeing the results that you’ve been used to.

“She’s all good now. She was in for surgery whilst I was playing in Wuhan. So it was a last-minute decision to come out to China.

“It kind of did my head in a little bit. It’s not nice knowing that someone’s going to be on an operating table whilst you’re hitting snooker balls around.

“But those are the sort of sacrifices that me and my family are willing to make to be successful at this game.

“Sometimes you’ve got to make sure your head’s clear. Thankfully now I feel like I’m getting there.”

Wilson is known as the Warrior and during these difficult moments, when nothing seems to be going his way, when he needs to be there for his loved ones, he will need to rely on those fighting qualities more than ever before.

British fashion brand puts hundreds of jobs at risk after £191million takeover deal

HUNDREDS of people are at risk of losing their job after a popular digital retailer has launched a consultation period.

The clothing and footwear brand has entered a consultation in mid-September.

N Brown, which owns JD Williams, Simply Be, and Jacamo, has started a 45-day consultation period, putting 270 roles at risk.

All of the company’s departments could be affected, as reported by Drapers.

An estimated 200 employees at the head office and 70 warehouse workers could be made redundant.

A spokesperson for N Brown Group told Drapers: “In a challenging retail environment, we are taking steps to accelerate the delivery of our strategic transformation and our new financial services offering, building a stronger, more sustainable future for our business.

“This process does require organisational change, which has unfortunately resulted in a number of roles being placed at risk of redundancy.

“We appreciate that this is a very worrying time for those impacted, and we continue to support all of our colleagues through this process.”

The consultation period is expected to end in early November.

Last year, the fashion brand had to cut 105 jobs across buying, merchandising, trading, logistics, finance, data and creative.

N Brown is headquartered in Manchester, and employs over 1,400 people across the UK.

The 160-year firm was acquired by Joshua Alliance for £191million on February 12.

After the takeover deal, N Brown ended its four-year stint on the London Stock Exchange’s junior Alternative Investment Market (AIM) as it was not benefiting from being listed.

According to Alliance, the firm couldn’t afford to bear the costs of its listing, given its shareholder structure and extremely low trading liquidity.

How we saved for a £3.2K trip to Disney World with zero effort, no spreadsheets or even any banking

MANY people dream of being able to take their family on a holiday to Disney World – but it can be expensive when you add everything up.

One couple shared how they managed to easily save £3,200 with little effort and didn’t even notice the cash being gone.

Shannon, who posts under @shannonday29, shared how she used one of the saving bottles that you add loose change to, as her method.

All she had to do was put in spare coins that she found in her wallet and around the house.

After two years, they had filled up the bottle and were able to take it to Natwest to cash in their coins.

After tipping it in the machine, they were amazed to discover they had saved £3,261.

Many people were hugely impressed with her saving, and rushed to the comments to give their views.

One said: “Wow that’s amazing.”

Another added: “We have a bottle like that!!! Well done!”

However, one joked: “I have that coke bottle. Only 2 inches filled in the last 7 years.”

SAVING FOR CHRISTMAS

Christmas is just around the corner, and if you are looking for a way to put some cash aside for presents and decorations, there are some tricks to try.

One way to make sure you can afford the cost of Christmas is by working backwards.

Figure out how much you will need to spend on all your Christmas presents and food.

Next divide this by the number of days until Christmas.

Every day in the run up save this amount into your savings account or put the cash in a jar.

If you think you’ll spend £300 then you would need to save just £3.09 a day until Christmas Day.

SUPERMARKET SAVINGS

Several supermarkets offer schemes that give you a bonus towards your Christmas shop.

Most supermarkets pay out the bonus based on the total amount you have saved by a certain day or month.

For example, with Tesco’s Christmas Saver account, you get a £12 bonus once you have saved £200.

This would come in your November Clubcard statement in two parts.

The first is a voucher equal to the amount you saved.

You will also get a bonus voucher, which you could then use to pay in store or online.

Tesco, Asda, Iceland, Sainsbury’s, Co-op and Morrisons all offer these schemes.

Iceland’s is the most generous and has a maximum bonus of £50.

There is no cut-off to pay in and the bonus is paid within 48 hours.

Money saving challenges

Here’s some of our favourite money saving challenges.

  • Weather saving challenge – Save the amount equal to whatever the highest temperature was that week. £1 = 1C.
  • 1p challenge – save 1p a day for everyday of the year, but it increase the amount by 1p each day. So day one you save 1p, 2p on day two and 3p on day three. When you reach 100 days you start adding a £1 coin each day too, while this increases to a £2 coin each day plus pennies at 200 days, and £3 each day on top of pennies at day 300.
  • 20p a day challenge – Start by putting 20p in savings, then increase the amount by 20p every day. For example, the first week will look like this: 20p, 40p, 60p, 80p, £1, £1.20, £1.40.
  • £5 a week challenge – Like the 20p challenge, put aside £5 a week and increase it by a fiver each week. Eg £5, £10, £15, £20
  • Round-up challenge – Every time you buy something, round up the purchase to the nearest £1 and put the difference in a savings account. Eg. You pay £2.60, so you put 40p in savings. You can use an app such as Monzo or Starling to do this.
  • Bingo challenge – Here you have a bingo card with different numbers on it and you tick them off when you’ve put that amount in your savings account. It can be ad hoc but you have to tick them all off by the end of the month.
  • Monday to Sunday challenge – With this challenge, you simply save £1 on Monday, £2 on Tuesday and so on until the weekend where you don’t save on Saturday or Sunday.
  • 365 day challenge – Every Sunday you put aside £1, followed by £2 on Monday, £3 on Wednesday and so on. On Saturday you’ll put away £7, and then the process repeats and you’ll put aside £1 on Sunday as the new week begins

New Covid strains and flu surge up to 70% in a week – as experts warn of winter ‘quademic’

EXPERTS have urged Brits to protect themselves with “simple steps” as infections of new Covid strains and flu surge.

The number of flu cases almost doubled in a week – reflecting a 70 per cent increase – a report by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) showed.

Covid-19 cases also rose, mainly driven by the new XFG strain dubbed Stratus.

Another variant, known as the NB.1.8.1 or Nimbus, is also circulating.

The rise in cases comes ahead of a looming winter ‘quademic’.

Health experts fear that Covid, flu, the vomiting bug norovirus and coughing bug RSV will all surge as cold weather sets in – placing pressure on hospitals and the NHS and making the coming months “very challenging”.

In its most recent report, UKHSA warned flu cases were “increasing”, particularly among “young adults”.

The number of people testing positive for influenza in hospital rose to 3.3 per cent in the week leading up to October 5 – almost double the 1.9 per cent positivity rate recorded the week before.

“Emergency department attendances for influenza-like-illness increased”, according to the health watchdog, but “the number of influenza-confirmed acute respiratory infections remained low”.

At the same time, 4.3 million people have received their flu vaccine – including 3.57 million last week alone, according to NHS England.

More than a million people have also received the Covid-19 vaccine.

Speaking of Covid, infections are rising too, fuelled by two new Covid variants that seem to be bypassing immunity from previous infections or vaccines.

The number of people testing positive for the virus in hospital rose from 11.7 per cent to 12.9 per cent in a week.

Hospitalisations for Covid increased to 4.65 per 100,000 compared to 3.41 per 100,000 in the previous week, mainly for patients aged 85 and over, and ICU admissions rose from 0.10 per 100,000 to 0.14 per 100,000.

Meanwhile, there were 78 acute respiratory incidents connected to Covid reported in the week leading up to October 5.

The Stratus and Nimbus strains are now the most common Covid variants being passed around in the UK.

The new Stratus variant is the currently the most dominant in the UK[/caption]

UKHSA said Stratus was “the most prevalent lineage” in recently sampled Covid tests.

Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, said: “The first weekly surveillance report of the 2025/26 season shows that both flu and Covid-19 positivity continue to increase, so everyone eligible for vaccination should take it up now to ensure optimal protection.

“The NHS national booking system has opened for all eligible groups to book their flu and Covid-19 vaccination appointments.”

It comes after major hospitals introduced mandatory mask-wearing to combat rising flu and Covid infections.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust – which operates the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital – said visitors and patients would be asked to wear masks at all times in some key areas.

Protect yourself with ‘simple steps’

As respiratory virus cases rise, UKHSA officials shared tips to stay safe and healthy.

Dr Lopez Bernal said: “Remember that there are simple steps everyone can take to protect themselves and others.

“Anyone experiencing flu or COVID-19 symptoms, including high temperature, cough and feeling tired or achy, should try to minimise contact with others, particularly with those who may be vulnerable.

“If you have symptoms and need to leave the house, our advice remains that you should consider wearing a face covering.

“Washing hands regularly and using and disposing tissues in bins can reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses, as can ensuring that indoor areas are well ventilated.”

Dr Amanda Doyle, national director for primary Care and community services at NHS England, said: “Vaccination is a crucial part of our efforts to protect the vulnerable and prepare for what we expect to be a very challenging winter, so I’m delighted to see this big increase in the numbers of people getting vaccinated at this stage.

“It is all the more vital as data shows viruses are beginning to increase, with our teams working extremely hard to make it as easy as possible to get vaccinated at your local GP practice, pharmacy, school or other community clinic.

“Vaccinations are our best defence against these potentially very dangerous viruses and can genuinely save lives, so I would urge everyone eligible to come forward for their jabs as soon as they can, with easy to book appointments or drop-in sessions now available closer to home.”

The NHS is urging people to check they are still eligible to receive a Covid-19 vaccine before booking – the NHS website sets out whether your age, health condition or medication means you are eligible, and your GP practice or pharmacist will confirm this before giving you the vaccine.

Vaccines to get this winter

COVID-19

The COVID-19 vaccine helps protect against COVID-19, which can be a serious or life-threatening illness for some people.

It’s usually offered on the NHS in spring and early winter to people who need extra protection from COVID-19.

Getting the COVID-19 vaccine can help reduce your risk of getting severe symptoms, help you recover more quickly, and reduce your risk of having to go to hospital or dying.

You can get the winter COVID-19 vaccine on the NHS if you:

  • are aged 75 or over (including those who will be 75 by 31 January 2026)
  • are aged six months to 74 years and have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment
  • live in a care home for older adults

Vaccination appointments will take place from October 1 2025.

Flu

The flu vaccine is offered on the NHS every year in autumn or early winter but you can only get it for free if you:

  • are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by 31 March 2026)
  • have certain long-term health conditions
  • are pregnant
  • live in a care home
  • are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer’s allowance
  • live with someone who has a weakened immune system

Frontline health and social care workers can also get a flu vaccine through their employer.

Most eligible people can get the flu vaccine from 1 October 2025 but some people, including anyone who is pregnant, have been able to get vaccines from September.

RSV

The RSV vaccine helps protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections – a common cause of coughs and colds that is common over a person’s lifetime.

It usually gets better by itself, but in some people (especially babies and older adults) it can cause illnesses, such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

You can get a free RSV vaccination on the NHS if:

  • you’re 28 weeks pregnant or more – the vaccine is recommended during every pregnancy to help protect your baby after they’re born
  • you’re aged 75 to 79
  • you turned 80 years old after 1 September 2024

You can book vaccines online or in the NHS App now.

Source: NHS

Flu vaccines are available for everyone aged 65 and over, under 65s in clinical risk groups, care home residents and carers, close contacts of those who are immunosuppressed, frontline health and social care workers, as well as children and pregnant women.

Those living in adult care homes are eligible for both the flu and Covid vaccine.

UKHSA also shared details on norovirus and RSV rates, which for the time being remain “low” and “within expected levels” for the time of year.

But officials still shared ways to curb the spread of the nasty vomiting bug “as we approach the colder months”.

“If you have diarrhoea and vomiting, don’t return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped and don’t prepare food for others in that time either.

“If you are unwell, avoid visiting people in hospitals and care homes to prevent passing on the infection in these settings.

“Washing your hands with soap and warm water and using bleach-based products to clean surfaces will also help stop infections from spreading.

“Alcohol gels do not kill norovirus so don’t rely on these alone.”

Watch as miles-long traffic jam brings 36-lane highway in China to halt as 10MILLION cars hit roads for national holiday

THIS is the astonishing moment China’s 36-lane highway is brought to a standstill as 10 million cars headed home after a national holiday.

Footage shows the 24-hour traffic jam at Wuzhuan toll station, which left thousands stranded with “no way out”.

AFP
Some 10 million cars are thought to have amassed on the highway[/caption] Map of China showing the location of a 36-lane highway near Hefei, Chuzhou, and Shanghai, with an inset photo of the Wuzhuang Toll Station jammed with cars.

The Wuzhuang toll station is the largest in China and consists of 36 lanes.

Video shows endless lines of red light filling the lanes before converging into just four at the toll booths.

According to authorities, roughly 120,000 vehicles passed that day.

The unusually long queues were caused by millions of locals returning home after a national holiday, which spans across eight days from October 1 to October 8.

Officials desperately urged residents to seek alternative routes in a bid to ease the congestion.

Shenzhen’s subway and bus line even extended their operating hours to draw pressure away from the road.

Clips of the mammoth queues have gone viral online with some drawing parallels with India‘s traffic jams.

One user said: “Gotta always be ready with food, water, blankers, and a portable toilet lol.

“I always keep an empty tin can in my car just in case!” “Chaos looks beautiful when you are not in it”

While another added: “Average day in Gurgaon.”

China boasts more than 100,000 miles of motorways – more than any other country in the world.

A staggering achievement, considering the country had no motorways at all in 1988.

Earlier this year, the Huangjuewan Interchange in Chongqing went viral for its loop-the-loop style roads.

The 12-storey tangle of tarmac features 15 ramps, 20 junctions, and enough twists and turns to spin anyone out of control.

World's worst traffic jams

  • China, 2010. The most famous and longest jam in history, lasting 12 days and stretching over 60 miles on China’s National Highway G110.
  • France, 1980. This was a 109-mile jam.
  • East and West Germany, 1990: The jam with the most vehicles involved 18 million cars over the Easter weekend after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
  • São Paulo, Brazil, 2009: This city saw over 182 miles of traffic congestion on 522 miles of road.

One user said: “You can visit, but you can never leave.”

Some even joked it was enough to make any sat-nav system lose its mind.

“My GPS told me: go where you want and leave me alone!”

Stretching over 10 miles (16.4 km), the labyrinth was originally designed to link the city of Chongqing with its airport and a major expressway.

However, it’s mind-boggling layout has made it a global talking point.

When visiting China 2019 with The Grand Tour, iconic petrol-head Jeremy Clarkson remarked that the country’s road system was “fast becoming the eighth wonder of the world”, and it’s not hard to see why.
