Rooney slams ‘disrespectful’ Gerrard after England ‘losers’ rant but admits Man Utd and Liverpool stars didn’t get on

WAYNE ROONEY insists that questioning the attitude of England’s Golden Generation is “disrespectful”.

Steven Gerrard recently caused a stir by saying he spent his international heyday in a squad of “egotistical losers“.

Gerrard also claimed that “hatred” between Liverpool and Manchester United players was part of the reason they never made it past the quarter-finals of a major tournament.

But Rooney scoffed at the idea that the Three Lions’ current crop have a better mindset.

He told The Wayne Rooney Show: “I wouldn’t say better attitude. That’s disrespectful to us as players because we worked hard, we tried.

“What you have now is players [from rival teams] training [together] before they go back for pre-season – Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford, for instance. It’s a different generation.

“It [was] difficult to have that relationship with Liverpool and Man Utd players.

“It’s easier now. I speak to Steven all the time.

“I was aware that Becks and Gary Neville and Scholesy, you could see they weren’t going to be close to the Liverpool players. But one thing is for sure – everyone worked hard for each other.”

United legend Rooney, who was England‘s record goal-scorer until Harry Kane toppled him in 2023, wasn’t totally on board with Gerrard’s “egotistical losers” dig either.

He added: “I wouldn’t quite put it that way but I know what he’s saying. There were a lot of big characters in the dressing room.”

Gerrard and Rooney each played well over 100 games for England, scoring 74 goals between them.

But years of underachievement made way for a string of impressive tournament runs after the Golden Generation hung up their boots.

The Three Lions made two Euros finals and a World Cup semi-final under Gareth Southgate.

And Thomas Tuchel has a youthful side purring ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Thousands of best-selling tumble dryers are recalled in UK over fears they’ll catch on FIRE

ARGOS has issued a safety warning for a number of best-selling tumble dryers.

The manufacturer has ordered a recall after a possible overheating and fire risk was identified.

The brand – sold via Argos – has advised to stop using the dryer immediately[/caption]

Customers who own one of the affected Hisense models are being urged to stop using the appliance immediately and unplug it from the mains.

The recall covers two 10kg capacity models sold through Argos between 1 February and 29 August this year:

  • DH5S102BW (White) – Catalogue number 465/3594
  • DH5S102BB (Black) – Catalogue number 525/6921

The Argos website explains: “Following a recent review, Hisense have identified that in some cases, a component inside the specific models of tumble dryers may not perform as intended.

“The compressor wiring harness may be damaged due to contact with the support drum wheel which can lead to overheating and potential fire hazard.”

They advise: “Please stop using the dryer immediately.

“Unplug the appliance from the power supply.

“Contact Hisense customer support team for further assistance – they will verify if you are affected by checking your batch/serial number (as shown above) so please have your serial number ready when you call.”

Argos confirmed it is sharing customer details with Hisense to help speed up the process.

The manufacturer says the problem stems from the compressor’s electrical wiring, which can be damaged by contact with the drum’s support wheel — a fault that could cause the appliance to overheat and, in rare cases, catch fire.

The wider recall notice, first issued on August 25, affects multiple Hisense models made between November 2024 and March 2025 and sold across more than 20 European countries, including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain.

Hisense has confirmed that it is complying with all EU safety regulations and has already notified national authorities.

Anyone who believes they own an affected dryer should contact Hisense directly on 0203 865 1446 (Monday–Friday, 9am–6pm; Saturday, 10am–4pm) or email productrecall.gb@hisense.com.

Customers are advised to have their serial number ready when calling so the support team can check whether their appliance needs inspection.

All repair and replacement work will be carried out free of charge.

Hisense stressed that product recalls are precautionary and part of its commitment to customer safety.

The website continued: “Hisense are offering free in-home inspections and repairs for all affected units.

“All costs related to repair will be covered by Hisense and their service teams are ready to assist you promptly and professionally to ensure your peace of mind.”
