Templegate’s Cesarewitch 20-1 tip, 1-2-3 prediction and runner-by-runner guide to £175,000 Newmarket showstopper

THE 2m2f Cesarewitch at Newmarket is worth a whopping £90,000 to the winner and always a huge betting heat.

Here, in-form tipster Templegate takes you through each runner of the 3.40 Saturday race, revealing his tip and 1-2-3 prediction at the bottom.

Trainer Willie Mullins wearing a brown hat and dark blue jacket.

He rates each horse out of five stars (one the worst, five the best) and you can back any horse you fancy simply by clicking their odds.

Templegate’s Cesarewitch runner-by-runner guide

HIPOP DE LOIRE 3

HIP dip. Smart stayer, solid Doncaster Cup third latest. Proven on ground and stays all day. Consistent type for Mullins but rarely wins. Solid each-way player.

DIVINE COMEDY 3

DIVINE right. Reliable mare thriving this year. Strong Goodwood second showed she’s in good heart. Handles any ground and stays well. Genuine contender if finding a bit more late.

BARNSO 2

SO what. Consistent handicapper for in-form yard. Stays, travels, but just below top class. Should run well but come up short.

DAWN RISING 3

DAWN chorus. Battle-hardened stayer, good Curragh fifth last time. Acts on all ground and stays strongly. Not easy to win with but likely to run well again.

THE SHUNTER 2

SHUNTED. 2023 winner from canny yard. Will keep going but will surely not be good enough to strike aged 12.

BUNTING 4

BUNTING not out. Willie Mullins and Tony Bloom team up with this potential improver. Unexposed at this marathon trip and Buick booked. Could improve plenty off a fair weight.

MANXMAN 3

MAN alive. Second last year from 8lb lower. Honest effort expected again from strong traveller who finishes well. Solid each-way despite higher mark.

ALPHONSE LE GRANDE 4

GRANDE chance. Last year’s nose winner is just 6lb higher today. Solid York run latest and likes any ground. Looks set for another big effort under experienced rider.

BEYLERBEYI 4

BEY a good hope. Has improved a bundle this season. Shapes like a stayer and handles all ground. Serious player for canny trainer.

FIREBLADE 3

FIRE flies. Proven stamina for 2m and in good form. Needs a bit more for this level but is capable of better. Overpriced.

NDAAWI 3

HERE Wi go. Galway Hurdle winner who ran well on the level at Chester. Yard adept at these staying tests. Stays well, respected in first-time blinkers.

MORDOR 5

MOR to come. Another Elliott runner who went close over 2m4f at Goodwood so is a certain stayer and looked well handicapped. Go very close if Spencer doesn’t overdo the waiting tactics.

SEDDON 1

SEDDON done. Grand old campaigner back on Flat after chasing. Stays, trip ideal, but absence and age count against him.

WINTER FOG 3

FOG horn. Stout stayer, who got back to winning ways at Tramore. Handles ground and stays strongly. Classy jumper could be a lively outsider for Mullins.

VAGUELY ROYAL 1

ROYAL flushed. Lost spark since leaving Gosdens. Tumbled down weights but little recent encouragement. Starts for another new yard today.

REVEREND HUBERT 4

REV up. Bolted up here last time on Flat return. Loves this track and trip and a 4lb penalty won’t stop him. Goes on any ground and huge player again.

SURREY BELLE 2

BELLE tolls. Improving mare, stylish Ayr winner over 1m5f latest. Up in class but stays strongly and handles any surface. Up in class today so needs more.

POLE STAR 3

STAR potential. Has shown promise over 1m6f and shapes like he’ll stay. Likes any ground and capable of better under Fanning.

BELGRAVIAN 3

BEL sounds good. Stayed on well into third over 2m2f here latest. Likes quick ground and yard in form. Progressing and looks an each-way player.

CAPRELO 3

CAP fits. Game all-weather winner over 2m last time. Up the weights and in class but it’s early days and trainer is a past master with stayers.

BASHFUL BOY 1

FUL of it. Grand old battler, knows this course and trip but looks short of this standard from out of the weights.

Templegate’s tip and 1-2-3 prediction

MORDOR can score in the £175,000 Cesarewitch.

Gordon Elliott has a fine chance with this stout stayer who ran a cracker over this trip at Goodwood last time.

Beylerbeyi has a big chance stepping up in distance too for canny Ian Williams.

Willie Mullins has a strong hand with Bunting heading his team, while last year’s winner Alphonse Le Grande is in the mix again.

1st Mordor
2nd Beylerbeyi
3rd Bunting

My 10-1 tip for a belting Dewhurst renewal and 16-1 Cesarewitch fancy who’s returning to form at just the right time

FLOATING away in the Red Sea is Oxagon, an industrial city developed for years ahead.

And it’s looking to the future that makes me think its equine namesake might be underestimated if he goes well in the biggest juvenile event of them all at Newmarket today.

Oisin Murphy, wearing a light blue helmet and purple and white jockey silks, talking to a man in a suit at Goodwood Racecourse.

Oisin Murphy can put a serious marker down for the 2,000 Guineas with victory in the Dewhurst on Saturday[/caption]

Oxagon trades at 50-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas, but he will be slashed from those odds if making a splash in this afternoon’s Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, the two-year-old event won by champions like City of Troy, Frankel, Zafonic, Generous and El Gran Senor.

It won’t be easy, as this renewal looks a belter live on ITV Racing.

In the line-up are the Group 1 National Stakes one-two in the unbeaten Zavateri and Gstaad, plus Godolphin’s Distant Storm, who looked very good when hacking up in the Group 3 Somerville Tattersalls Stakes last month.

Then there is another horse yet to taste defeat in Alparslan, impressive for Karl Burke in a valuable sales race at the Curragh, as well as Italy and Gewan who have classy bits of form to their name.

Indeed, Gewan was was the 6-5 favourite when last seen in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, only to finish fourth behind last weekend’s Longchamp Group 1 hero Puerto Rico.

Oxagon was the Champagne second, and on the day I got the idea connections were disappointed.

Now, however, the form looks strong, and the son of Frankel didn’t get the best of runs that day before staying on nicely to be only beaten a length.

I think he’s over-priced for Saturday and for the Guineas, and he has every chance of providing champion jockey Oisin Murphy with a first Dewhurst victory.

Oxagon’s trainer, John Gosden, who now is in partnership with his son Thady, bagged the juvenile gem with Too Darn Hot in 2018.

It would be wrong not to flag the terrific season Eve Johnson Houghton has had with Zavateri, a bargain 35,000gns yearling, although a horse who was never meant to be sold for so little.

The July Stakes, Vintage and National hero would be much shorter in the betting today if handled by Gstaad’s trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Johnson Houghton is a cracking trainer and this is one of the biggest days in her career.

She will remember only too well her old man Fulke took the Dewhurst with Tout Seul in 2002 as well as Ribofilio in 1968!

Of course the big betting race for many this afternoon is the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap over two and a quarter miles, a race that famously develops over two counties.

The draw is often key in the Cesarewitch, for all many will say there is plenty of time to get organised.

This time last year Alphonse le Grande got the better of Manxman to land a 33-1 shock under Jamie Powell, and both horses go again.

This time Manxman has to give his old rival 1lb, but I still feel Manxman can reverse the form.

My selection returned to form with a staying on third at Goodwood last time.

The Simon & Ed Crisford-trained inmate had been out of sorts in two runs prior to that effort but had been a decent winner back at the Sussex course earlier in the season.

Last term he was second in this off a mark of 86 and while he goes off 94 here I still think he can play a decent part from a perfect draw in stall 2.

Jack Callan takes off 5lb, which actually means he’s only 3lb higher than 12 months ago. An each-way chance.

Tony Martin trains Alphonse le Grande, and he’s seen as one of the canniest handlers in the business.

But so is another Irishman in Charles Byrnes, and he saddles Reverend Hubert.

The Reverend was a winner last time out and many bookies can only now pray for his defeat.

Willie Mullins is always to be feared in these events, and the champion jumps trainer relies on Bunting, Hipop de Loire and Winter Fog.

The latter is an old boy at the age of 11, but finished third behind Golden Ace in the Champion Hurdle back in March. He’s no mug.

Bunting goes in the colours of mega punter Tony Bloom, and was once fourth to Kargese in the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown.

All in all the Cambridgeshire is a right conundrum but hopefully Manxman can hit the frame.

A cracking day ahead… Yeeehaaa!

Terrifying moment TORNADO strikes Spanish holiday coast as Storm Alice brings horror floods & evacuations

THIS is the frightening moment a tornado hits a Spanish holiday spot as Storm Alice sparks more horror floods and evacuations.

The alarming weather phenomenon was captured tearing through the coastal town – just hours after flooding wreaked havoc in the area.

The tornado, which has sparked mass evacuations, road closures and signal problems, was reported in Cartagena, Murcia earlier today.

Terrifying footage shows the twister below a blanket of thick grey clouds.

Powered by the day’s thunderstorms, it careers through the sky – leaving a trail of devastation.

Some 67 people have been forced to evacuate the area, which has been under red alert since yesterday for raging winds and storms.

The majority of these were holidaymakers in local caravan parks, officials said.

Brits already in these areas or planning travel to the region have been urged to check the foreign office’s travel advice, after an updated alert was issued this morning.

The government website warned: “Severe weather warnings are in place today in Murcia and Valencia, including the province of Alicante.

“Disruptions to travel are likely. If you are in the affected areas, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates.

“If you are planning to travel, check for messaging from your travel provider or airline.”

A red alert was also issued across parts of Spain as officials warned residents to avoid driving as treacherous weather tears through the region.

The weather warning – in place from 10am today until midnight – affects the southern coast of Alicante and in some areas of Murcia, including Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.

Torrential showers have already caused chaos in holiday hotspot Ibiza and Cartagena with flash flooding reported across parts of the regions.

Meanwhile, holidaymakers in Villas Caravaning campsite in La Manga, Murcia region, were forced to evacuate following heavy rainfall.

Spain‘s weather forecaster AEMET warned of “extraordinary danger” and urged residents to take extra caution when venturing outside.

Shocking footage shows roads turned into fast-flowing rivers after storms plunged the tarmac underwater.

Alicante’s fire service said they carried out 31 emergency operations over the course of a day – pulling obstacles out of water-logged roads.

And in the Levante region, classes have been put on hold until the storm settles down.

A total of 142 incidents were recorded across Murcia this morning due to the blizzard.

While emergency services received a staggering 161 calls overnight requesting urgent help clearing the floods.

Firefighters, police and other emergency crew remain on high alert after an elderly resident in the Murcian district of Los Dolores suffered minor injuries from a collapsed roof.

Emergency services in holiday hotspot Ibiza are braced for a busy few days as the area was put on orange alert for rain and storms.

The biblical downpours have ravaged the country over the last month.

Just yesterday, authorities warned of “extraordinary danger” as flash floods erupted across Valencia.

Rain is expected to pummel the region with 250 millimetres of water due by Sunday.

It comes just days after the region was placed on red alert as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged locals to follow guidance issued by emergency services in a bid to avoid last year’s devastation.

The horrific 2024 floods caused the deaths of about 232 people and ransacked Valencia’s communities.

Sánchez previously called for locals to take “great caution” in the face of the heavy rains.

He said on X: “Let us follow the instructions of the civil protection agency and the emergency services at all times.”

Last month, heartstopping clips of Tarragona showed broken trees and upturned cars as the brutal water tore through towns.

Video also showed motorists stuck inside their vehicles waiting to be rescued.

Authorities quickly labelled streets “death traps” and urged residents to remain at home as much as possible.

Storm Alice is a DANA – which stands for “Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos,” or “isolated depression at high altitudes”.

The “cold drop” phenomenon occurs when more warm and moist Mediterranean air than usual is sucked high into the atmosphere after a cold system hits the country.

The temperature difference between the cold air aloft and the warm surface air creates instability, leading to rapid uplift of warm, moist air and the formation of intense thunderstorms.
