A PRESIDENT weaponising his Department for Justice to pursue his political enemies.
That’s the charge thrown at Donald Trump this week after his tormenting New York prosecutor faces prosecution over a £15,000 mortgage fraud.
The indictment of Letitia James comes hot on the heels of charges for former FBI Director James Comey over lying under oath to Congress.
And Trump’s allies say that’s just the “appetiser” in a wave of retribution.
After four years of pursuing President Trump through the courts, raiding his home and attempting to render him ineligible to return to the White House — and even jail him — the cries from the Democrats and their media cheerleaders of facism and over-reach ring very hollow.
They’re trying to make plenty of heat, but after years of so-called political lawfare, so far there’s not much light.
But just imagine the absolute eruption of righteous fury, wall-to-wall coverage and international condemnation that would be pouring down on the White House right now if it had emerged the Trump administration had accessed the communication records of eight Senators.
Because that is the smoking gun on ex-President Joe Biden’s desk in newly declassified documents related to their attempts to take down President Trump.
The Senate Judiciary Committee published proof that the FBI targeted the data of calls made and received by the sitting Republican lawmakers in the wake of the Capitol riots in January 2021.
I should be surprised that this isn’t absolutely bombshell news, yet most of the Trump- hating media here seem to be doing all they can to play the story down.
Ever since Richard Nixon was toppled in 1974 after covering up the bugging of the Democratic HQ at the now infamous Watergate complex, the suffix “gate” has been shoehorned on thousands of scandals. Rinka-gate, Lewinsky-gate, Party-gate, Pasty-gate Celeb-gate, Porn-gate, you name it.
Some are more serious than others, but it’s very rare that you hear anything branded worse than the original Watergate scandal.
Yet that’s what veteran Republican Senator Chuck Grassley declared this week when he unveiled details of the Biden administration’s communications snooping as part of the FBI’s Arctic Frost probe into electoral interference.
“Based on the evidence to date, Arctic Frost and related weaponisation by federal law enforcement under Biden was arguably worse than Watergate,” the Senator hit out.
And it was a view echoed by former FBI Special Agent Ren McEachern who told me this week the comparison was “not overblown”.
The Republicans are spitting tacks, not least at the utter hypocrisy of the left who howl when their side gets a knock on the door from the Feds, yet face far more serious allegations of executive overreach.
Republican Senator Josh Hawley branded it “spying on the president’s political opponents” which he called “a profound violation”.
“This is an abuse of power beyond Watergate, beyond J. Edgar Hoover, one that directly strikes at the Constitution, the separation of powers, and the First Amendment,” he added.
And some say there is bad blood across the Hill.
“The betrayal that the Senators feel is just about deeper than anything they have felt in a while,” Republican Congressman Ben Cline told me.
And he said in private “the Democrats are also mortified at the action that was taken against Republican Senators. It really cuts both ways.”
He added in hope: “I think we are going to see a unified front against that sort of action.”
As ever it fell to the President for the pithiest denunciation of the Special Counsel who led the Arctic Frost probe, with Mr Trump blasting: “Deranged Jack Smith got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. A real sleazebag!”
While there will undoubtedly be a long probe in the furore, if anything, the revelation of the Democrat’s hypocrisy gives the Trump administration cover to go further.
As one of Trump world’s most famous and pugnacious lawyers, Mike Davis demanded to know from the Democrats: “So indicting your political enemies is bad now? What changed?”
Davis, who runs the anti-left-wing lawfare Article III project, warns the Department for Justice is just getting going, suggesting Letitia James was “just the appetiser”.
But accepting the charge of eye for an eye, he insists “two wrongs don’t make a right but they do make it even”, warning more squeamish Republicans “we must stop being weak and stupid” and “it’s time to take the gloves off.”
Pursuing political opponents on corruption charges, fair or otherwise, used to be the domain of banana republics and Communist regimes.
These things were once best tested at the ballot box and left at that.
As Rep. Cline put it: “The US has a great tradition of the rule of law, we are the standard of the world. This is justice taking its course.”
And from where I’m sitting, the Democrats only have themselves to blame for unleashing this particular genie from the lamp.

A COUPLE have shared how they won £125,000 on the lottery after James Adams forgot to cancel their direct debit.
Rohanna Coulthard, 30, told fiancé James to cancel their £12.25 a month subscription for the Postcode Lottery as they saved for their wedding in June next year.
However, as luck would have it, due to his own self-described ‘incompetence’, the 31-year-old motion graphic designer forgot and won £125,000.
Their postcode – in Kingswood near Bristol – came up in this month’s draw securing them a sizeable share of the £1m cash prize pot along with seven of their neighbours.
James said: “I was going to stop doing it three months ago then forgot. Thank God for just being lazy and really silly. Incompetence pays off!”
Rohanna, who started screaming and giggling as soon as the cheque was revealed, said: “James never told me that he had signed up and I asked him to cancel the direct debit when I saw it going out because we are saving for the wedding.
“Thank goodness he didn’t. I wouldn’t be- doing too great and [would] probably not be very well.”
She laughed: “But here we are. I forgive him.”
The couple are planning to put their £125,000 jackpot towards a new bathroom and a honeymoon – following their wedding in Devon in May 2027.
The Lord Of The Rings fans got engaged three years ago and will now excitedly plan a honeymoon to their dream destination of New Zealand where the blockbusters were filmed.
James said: “We’ve always wanted to go to New Zealand to see the Hobbits! We’re big Lord Of The Rings fans. I’ve got a lot of family over there.
James, who has a tower with the Eye of Sauron tattooed on his left arm, said: “It’s a really beautiful place with lots of rolling fields and mountains.”
Admin worker Rohanna added: “We hadn’t planned a honeymoon. We thought we’d just do a minimoon to somewhere like Cornwall.
“Now to be able to do New Zealand is incredible…and find some Hobbit holes.
“We could maybe do French Polynesia on the same trip. It’s got luscious greenery and lots of open water.”
The couple opened up for their plans to use the cash for some home improvements, and a treat for their rescue greyhound, Marge.
Rohanna said: “This is going to help so much. It’ll go on the wedding for sure. We’ve been saving for it as much as we possibly can.
“We’ll get the bathroom gutted. We can get those nice tiles. And we’ll get the house plastered instead of me Polyfilla-ing it with my bare hands.”
She added: “The dog needs a new harness. Hers is falling apart.”
James chipped in: “You dream of something like this happening. We’re ecstatic, bewildered, thrilled…”

A CHINA spy-trial witness has accused ministers and prosecutors of botching it in a way that “smacks of interference.”
Ex-diplomat Charles Parton said it clearly showed “a desire not to offend China”.
The case against Parliamentary researcher Christopher Cash, 30, and teacher Christopher Berry, 33 — who both denied spying — collapsed last month.
The Crown Prosecution Service blamed ministers for failing to provide key evidence that China was a national security threat at the time.
Mr Parton, who was due to testify for the prosecution, slammed the CPS for failing to find new witnesses after the Government pulled its national security official at the last minute.
He told The Sun: “They are both to blame. The Government for withdrawing.
“But the CPS should have got some evidence from experts to say, ‘Is China a threat?’
“Then the jury could have said, ‘Yes, national security threat,’ and now we’re going ahead and trying this case.
“That smacks either of interference by the Government or just sheer incompetence.”
Sir Keir Starmer has blamed the previous government.
But Mr Parton has piled fresh pressure on No 10 and the PM’s national security adviser Jonathan Powell.
ONE in ten people get frisky in their sleep owing to “sexsomnia”, a study has shown.
The disorder, where dozers engage in sexual activity, was said to be more common than previously thought.
Of 1,002 people surveyed, 11 per cent said it had happened at least once, with six per cent experiencing some sexy shut-eye in the past three months.
Acts of self-love were most common, with five per cent of people touching themselves.
Groping a partner was next, for four per cent, while full-blown intercourse was rarest, at less than two per cent.
People might also have “spontaneous orgasms” or make “sexual vocalisations” in the night, according to researchers at Norway’s University of Bergen.
Men were more likely to be sexsomniacs than women.
It typically happens in the first hour after falling asleep, while stress and tiredness are said to increase the chances.
The study authors said: “Sexsomnia seems to be more prevalent than previously assumed.
“Our results suggest a considerable amount of the general population reportedly experience it.
“Sometimes the behaviour during sexsomnia deviates from waking sexual behaviour, where some become more gentle and passionate, whereas others act more aggressively and even violently towards their partner.”
A sexsomnia defence has derailed several rape and sex assault cases in court.
