About the Cenfri Bursary Programme 2026
The Centre for Financial Regulation and Inclusion (Cenfri) is offering bursaries for the 2026 academic year to support students pursuing a Masters-level qualification in Economics or a related field.
This bursary programme aims to empower students passionate about economic research and development by providing financial assistance, mentorship, and workplace experience opportunities.
Fields of Study
Bursaries will be awarded for Masters-level studies in:
- Economics, or
- Related fields (such as Development Studies, Finance, Policy Analysis, or Data Analytics)
Bursary Coverage and Benefits
The Cenfri Bursary will cover the following expenses:
- Tuition fees
- Monthly stipend
In addition, bursary recipients will benefit from:
- A dedicated mentor throughout the academic year
- A minimum of 6 weeks paid internship at Cenfri’s Durbanville offices and through remote work
- Potential full-time employment as a research analyst upon successful completion of studies
Shortlisted candidates will undergo a panel interview, technical ability assessment, and psychometric evaluation.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria before applying:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be entering a 1-year or final year of a Masters-level qualification in Economics or a related field in 2026
- Must have a strong interest in research and a passion for development
- Must have achieved a minimum overall GPA of 65% or higher in the latest academic year
- Must be an Employment Equity candidate
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must possess the following skills:
- Excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Advanced English language skills (verbal and written)
- Proficiency in MS Office applications
- Knowledge of Stata and household survey data analysis (advantageous)
- Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively
- Preference will be given to students residing in Cape Town to fully benefit from the mentorship and internship opportunities
