Another injury for Springbok facing uncertain future

Some senior Springbok stars have begun to make way for the next generation of talent this season, and it spoke volumes that Faf de Klerk only featured in two Tests in 2025.

Although the veteran halfback has had injury issues to contend with as he battled for form and fitness, the 34-year-old is clearly fourth in the scrumhalf pecking order as Cobus Reinach, Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg have hit new heights.

It’s now been confirmed that the double World Cup winner has been temporarily withdrawn from Japan’s Rugby League One competition and will return to South Africa for treatment after suffering an ankle injury in the Yokohama Canon Eagles’ season opener.

De Klerk has already stated his determination to fight his way back to fitness and form, but he now faces another period on the sidelines when he would have been hoping to begin reminding the national coaches of his enduring class.

De Klerk expressed his frustration after another injury setback.

“Once again, I feel very sad to be leaving and disappointed,” said De Klerk, who missed the closing rounds of last season due to a hand injury.

“I felt I really worked hard to come back and be ready for this season but I’m going back to make sure I get in the best condition possible to come back, join the team again and support if I’m not playing.

“I’ll be back as soon as possible to see all the supporters and players and hopefully join the last few games.”

Career change on the cards?

Meanwhile, RugbyPass reports that De Klerk is attracting interest from his former club the Sale Sharks, and could be leaving Japan after this season. The Newcastle Red Bulls are also expected to enter the race for his signature.

A move back to England could offer De Klerk a fresh start as he looks to reassert himself at international level.
