Chinese automaker Geely has officially rebooted its South African presence, unveiling a national growth strategy that targets 120 dealerships by 2028.
The return marks a significant shift for the brand, which was once known mainly for low-cost entry-level cars that never found real traction with local buyers.
This time, the company is re-entering the market with a distinctly different identity.
Geely steps into South African market
According to Mybroadband, Geely has grown into one of the world’s most influential carmakers, supported by a parent group that controls some of the biggest names in the industry.
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group owns Volvo, Lotus, Polestar, Proton and several emerging mobility brands and has also built a reputation for rapid innovation and strong investment in electric technology.
Geely Automobile alone carries a market valuation of more than HKD172 billion, which is over R380 billion.
The South African relaunch will begin with two compact SUVs built around the company’s newest electrified platforms.
The Geely E5 is a fully electric model aimed at the growing urban EV market, while the E5 EM i is a plug-in hybrid designed for drivers who want electric capability without the range anxiety. Both are positioned to compete in one of South Africa’s fastest-moving segments.
Changan returns too
In related news, another Chinese automaker, Changan, also made its official comeback to South Africa recently.
The car brand has now teamed up with Jameel Motors South Africa to reintroduce itself to local roads.
The launch took place at the end of October, signalling a major move by the company as it brings a diverse range of vehicles tailored to the South African terrain.
Changan’s name is not new to South African motorists. The brand previously sold passenger and commercial vehicles locally under the Chang’an and Chana names, including vans, light trucks, and buses.
