ANC mourns death of former Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has conveyed its condolences to the family, friends and comrades of former Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa, who passed away in hospital on Tuesday following an illness.

Hlongwa served as Gauteng’s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health from 2006 to 2009, before later taking on the role of ANC Chief Whip in the provincial legislature.

‘Deep sadness’

In a statement, the ANC expressed deep sadness at his passing, describing Hlongwa as an astute and seasoned educator who remained committed to the ideals of the liberation movement throughout his life.

The party noted that Hlongwa began his political activism in the late 1970s, drawing inspiration from prominent figures such as Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko.

Public service

According to the ANC, his lifelong dedication to political struggle and public service reflected his unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom and social justice.

“He remained a patriot and a combatant to the end,” the statement read.

Brian Hlongwa’s death marks the loss of a veteran political figure who played a significant role in Gauteng’s provincial government and the broader ANC structures.
