The African National Congress (ANC) held a memorial service in honour of the late Nathi Mthethwa.
Mthethwa’s body arrived at King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 10 October and was received by his family.
The ANC member, who was South Africa’s ambassador to Paris, was found dead at a hotel in the city on Monday, 29 September.
MTHETHWA HONOURED BY ANC
Several members of the political party gathered to honour the life of Mthethwa, remembering his dedication to the country’s liberation. ANC National Spokesperson Cde Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri delivered the keynote address at the event. She said Mthethwa dedicated his life’s work to the movement.
Mthethwa served as the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture from May 2019 to March 2023. Previously, the department was Arts and Culture, where he took on the role of minister from 2014 to 2019. As a Member of Parliament, he served as Chairperson of the Minerals and Energy Portfolio Committee from 2004 to 2008 and as Chief Whip of the ANC in 2008. He served on the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organisation Committee. He also previously held the position of Minister of Police.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said Mthethwa’s tenure in the National Executive followed a lifetime of political involvement and leadership. He sent his deepest condolences to the 58-year-old’s wife and their families.
NATION IN MOURNING
The former minister will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 2 at KwaMbonambi in KwaZulu-Natal. He will be laid to rest on Sunday, 12 October. Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy in honour of Mthethwa.
The National Flag has been flown at half-mast since Thursday, 9 October. The Special Official Funeral Category 2 declared by President Ramaphosa will entail ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service.
