The African National Congress (ANC) has praised former Minister Malusi Gigaba for voluntarily stepping aside from his party responsibilities following his formal corruption charge related to alleged misconduct at Transnet.
Acting ANC National Spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli confirmed that Mr Gigaba’s decision was taken unprompted, stating he had shown “respect for organisational processes” and acted to “protect the integrity and reputation of the movement”.
Mr Gigaba appeared recently in the Palm Ridge Magistrate Court on the corruption charge.
The ANC statement highlighted that his action aligns with the resolutions of the party’s 55th National Conference, which reaffirms that all members facing formal charges must voluntarily step aside.
The party insisted that the ‘step-aside’ rule does not imply guilt but is a crucial organisational measure to maintain public confidence during ongoing legal proceedings.
The ANC further argued that the decision “affirms the party’s renewal agenda” and “strengthens the collective efforts of the ANC to rebuild trust, reinforce accountability, and demonstrate that no individual stands above the organisation.”
The party concluded by thanking Mr Gigaba for his “leadership and discipline”.
