ANC criticises taxi and scholar transport sectors after deadly crash

The ANC has criticised the taxi and scholar transport sectors for reckless driving following the deaths of 14 children in a road accident.

The children died when the scholar transport vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck.

Reports indicate the driver attempted to overtake several cars, causing the tragic crash.

ANC Highlights Industry Shortcomings

Mahlengi Bhengu, the ANC’s spokesperson, said South Africa has already seen multiple tragic incidents since the start of the 2026 school year. These accidents have claimed children’s lives and left families devastated.

Our review of the transport industry, including taxis, shows serious issues. These include unroadworthy vehicles, overloading, reckless driving, and disregard for the law and commuters,” Bhengu said.

She criticised the sector’s threats to shut down operations over vehicle impoundments. Describing the threats as “arrogant” and showing a lack of readiness to comply with regulations.

Call for Stronger Law Enforcement and Safer Transport

Bhengu urged law enforcement to respond firmly to what she called the “nonchalant” and “indifferent” attitudes of scholar transport and taxi drivers.

She also called on parents to prioritise safe transport options for their children.

“Any vehicle that does not comply with the law must be impounded, and authorities must take steps to restore order,” she said.

The ANC proposed amending laws governing scholar transport to better protect children and commuters.

Bhengu also urged all stakeholders, including law enforcement, education authorities, and parents, to take urgent action to address the crisis.
