Amazon apologises after mocking a woman’s engagement ring and making a meme out of it

Amazon has put out an apology and deleted one of its posts after the official account for its streaming service made a meme out of a woman’s harmless post regarding her engagement to her partner. Savannah Monroe is just a regular Twitter user – no huge following and not a celeb – and she posted harmlessly about her engagement to her partner after doing a funny tweet about him. The post started to go viral and some people were discussing the size of Monroe’s ring – which prompted Amazon Prime Video India to make a The Summer I Turned Pretty meme out of it and it all went downhill from there. Here’s the full saga.

The post was innocent

Savannah Monroe went slightly viral on Twitter because she posted about her boyfriend having a ridiculous Niall Horan One Direction dog tag hanging on his wall. She then followed it up with a picture of her newly engaged hand, saying that her boyfriend proposed to her an hour after she posted about the Niall Horan dog tag. Wow timing, I must admit.

However, this post got some attention and people were commenting on the size of her engagement ring. Which is a completely weird thing to do about a total stranger, but herein lies the issue of Twitter and how entitled people feel to discuss you like you’re a major celeb when you’re just a normal person posting to your little community and doing nothing wrong.

Because of this post randomly getting attention, Monroe stated “Most of my posts don’t get more than twenty likes so one about a personal and special moment getting this much attention, a lot of it increasingly negative/judgmental, feels overwhelming. Consider that I’m a real person, I love my ring, and I’m very, very happy.

“My fiancé and I are not characters in a television show nor are we millionaires. Commenting on a ring size to an absolute stranger is anti-social behavior.”

Amazon Prime Video India randomly made a joke about it

In a now deleted post, Amazon Prime Video India quoted Monroe’s tweet and used it to make a meme about The Summer I Turned Pretty. The streaming service was joking about how people criticised Jeremiah’s ring that he proposed to Belly with – because similar to Monroe’s post people were criticising the size of it.

Savannah Monroe (quite rightly) then called out Amazon and said “when a huge streaming platform puts out a mean-spirited tweet about one of the happiest moments of your life for engagement, inviting harassment in droves.”

Amazon Prime Video India then deleted their original post and put out an apology after mocking the engagement. The social media team wrote: “Our recent tweet caused hurt and that’s not okay. We’ve removed it and are taking steps to ensure our content reflects our values of inclusivity. We’ll do better from hereon.”
