Alleged ANC fixer Brown Mogotsi to testify at Madlanga Commission

Controversial businessman and alleged ANC fixer Brown Mogotsi will appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry as it begins the second phase of its hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Commission said Phase Two will focus on “persons of interest” who were implicated by 27 witnesses over the 35 days of Phase One.

“Phase Two will focus on persons of interest, individuals who have been implicated in Phase One — giving them the opportunity to place before the Commission their version and/or responses to the allegations. Phase Two will proceed to rigorously test the evidence presented in Phase One,” the Commission said in a statement on Monday.

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST MOGOTSI

The North West businessman, linked to alleged police corruption and suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu, will answer several allegations levelled against him, including by a police detective and former member of the disbanded Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), identified only as Witness C.

Witness C told the Commission that Mogotsi allegedly facilitated payments made by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to Mchunu’s presidential campaign.

“Indeed, Mr Matlala was one of the people who contributed to the campaign. He contributed about R500k, whereby he purchased flight tickets, paid for the accommodation for the members of the ANC who were going to Cape Town for the January 8 rally for the ANC,” he said.

However, Mchunu, appearing before the parliamentary ad-hoc committee last month, vehemently denied having any close ties to Mogotsi.

MOGOTSI AND THE ANC

Mchunu told the committee probing allegations of police corruption that he did not have a personal relationship with Mogotsi.

The minister said that although he had known of Mogotsi since 2017, he regarded him as a “comrade, not an associate.”

Mchunu also denied Mogotsi’s alleged interference in the disbandment of the PKTT, as alleged by several witnesses at the Madlanga Commission.

Another witness at the Commission, SAPS Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, claimed that Mogotsi used his ANC connections and membership to secure money from underworld figures.

Khumalo alleged that Mogotsi used some of the proceeds for ANC activities. The party has since distanced itself from the controversial figure.
