‘A whole new Annie’: The Real Housewives star returns

This Friday, 28 November, Showmax premieres The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Africa. The show unites iconic Housewives from across the continent for a luxurious escape to Brazil.

The show follows the massive success of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: South Africa, one of the streamer’s most-watched titles of 2024.

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES GIRLS TRIP: AFRICA

This new season promises more drama, luxury, and unfiltered sisterhood. The franchise expands its reach, featuring stars from South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Representing The Real Housewives of Durban, Africa’s longest-running franchise, are fan favourites Annie Mthembu, Angel Ndlela, and Jojo Robinson.

They join forces with The Real Housewives of Johannesburg icons Madam Evodia Mogase and Christall Kay, according to the Showmax Stories.

ANNIE MTHEMBU RETURNS TO THE SCREEN

In a recent interview, Durban OG Annie Mthembu opened up about her highly anticipated return to the Real Housewives universe.

After a two-year break dedicated to self-work, Mthembu stated she is returning from a “place of strength, not survival.”

“I finally felt like me again; refreshed, recharged, and ready to have fun with it,” Mthembu said. “I’m in a different space mentally and spiritually, and I wanted to show that growth.”

When asked about her expectations for the continental cast of The Real Housewives, Mthembu shared she was excited but nervous.

“My mindset was simple: go in open-hearted, have fun, and represent Durban with grace and a little spice,” she explained.

She emphasised her desire to experience the “magic of African women coming together.”

Mthembu confirmed she formed genuine new friendships during the trip, finding “peace and connection in spaces I didn’t expect.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT REALITY TV

She singled out Nigeria’s Mariam Timmer and Nairobi’s Dr Catherine Masitsa as cast members who surprised her the most.

The reality star described them as vibrant and fun-loving, but warned, “Don’t play with their fire.”

She admitted that there are moments she wishes she had stayed off-screen, including a time she felt personally triggered.

DRAMA QUEENS ON THE REAL HOUSEWIVES: GIRLS TRIP

Mthembu believes these raw instances show real growth. As for drama, she crowned Mariam and fellow South African Christall Kay as the season’s drama queens.

She called their antics “pure entertainment,” according to Briefly.

For South African audiences eager to see a new side of their favourite Housewife, Mthembu promises a transformed presence.

“People should watch the show because now they will see a whole new Annie,” she said. “I’m lighter, happier, and way more self-aware, but still spicy enough to keep things interesting!”

The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Africa launches exclusively on Showmax on 28 November.
