[WATCH] – “We are not scared”, says EFF as Malema awaits gun case verdict

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema addressed scores of supporters outside the East London Magistrate’s Court.

Proceedings entered their second day on Tuesday, 30 September, as Malema awaited the verdict in his long-running case.

He is facing judgment over a 2018 incident in which he allegedly discharged a firearm during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebration.

EFF REAFFIRMS SUPPORT

Malema, joined by the party’s secretary-general, Marshall Dlamini, thanked supporters for standing by him throughout the trial. The Red Berets reaffirmed their commitment to the EFF leader, saying the party remains resolute. Addressing members, Dlamini emphasised their readiness for any outcome.

“We’ve been waiting for seven years. Say what you want to say – we are ready. The president is ready, and we are not scared of any decision,” said Dlamini.

Malema noted he would await the judgment before making further comment. However, the party has characterised the charges as “politically and racially motivated.”

VERDICT EXPECTED AFTER EVIDENCE REVIEW

The case continues on Wednesday, 1 October, after two days of reviewing witness testimonies. Malema faces several charges, including the unlawful discharge of a firearm, endangering lives, and contravening the Firearms Control Act. His co-accused and former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman, is also facing charges under the Firearms Control Act.

The alleged incident occurred at the EFF’s fifth birthday celebrations at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. Magistrate Twanet Olivier is expected to continue reading through the evidence before handing down the final judgment.
