A 23-year-old listener shared that her parents still treat her like a child, even though she has completed her degree and recently secured an internship.

She explained that she was invited to a braai and by 19h30 her parents were already calling to ask about her whereabouts.

Although she still lives at home, she feels her parents should ease up and accept that she is growing up.

Reaching out to The Best T in the City with Tbose, Anonymous wanted to know if there might be any blind spots she is overlooking.

“I’m a 23-year-old woman still living with my parents. Last week, my colleagues invited me to a Heritage Day braai. I told my parents about it, and they agreed. But on the day, around 19:30, I got a text from my mom telling me to come home because it was late. Hawu kanjani? The braai hadn’t even ended yet! Then my grandmother called, asking where I was and what time I’d be home. When I asked her what was wrong, she said my parents were complaining I was out too late.

“I explained I was still at the braai, and she told me to call her once I was home safely. Later, when I did call, she told me that my parents were upset, saying, “It’s 7:30 and she’s still out there, acting like she does as she pleases.” My dad even said, “Ever since she got this internship, she thinks she’s above us.” This wasn’t the first time – when I once asked for a curfew extension, he said the same thing about me acting “above them” since I got my degree.

“I honestly don’t know. I rarely go out, and when I do, it’s only once in a while – but every time it becomes a problem because l’m forced to leave early. Truth is, I want to move out. I’m tempted, but my internship is coming to an end soon, and finding a job is challenging right now. I want my freedom and independence.

“More than that, I want my parents to see that l’m growing up, getting older, and starting to live my own life. I can’t stay a caged bird forever. How can I persuade them to relax their restrictions, especially since I have always been a well-behaved child? Or do I have a blind spot?”
