Explore and enjoy Cape Town’s Big Six destinations

Spring may be in full swing, but it’s never too early to plan a summer getaway to Cape Town.

The Mother City boasts a wealth of natural scenery. Indeed, it’s famed for its statuesque mountains, world-class vineyards and shimmering blue seas.

Whether you’re looking to spend your summer holidays in the city for the first time or you’re planning a staycation, you simply have to include Cape Town’s “Big Six” destinations in your itinerary!

THE BIG SIX: CAPE TOWN’S TOP DESTINATIONS

To truly experience the best of Cape Town (especially in the summer months), be sure to visit these top six locations:

1. CAPE POINT

Cape Point is located at the southernmost tip of the African continent. It is a nature-lover’s paradise, featuring a wide array of fynbos vegetation such as proteas, restios and ericas.

As for fauna, there are over 250 species of birds to look out for, plus there’s a chance to see a Cape mountain zebra or a bontebok.

There are plenty of hiking trails to explore at Cape Point, allowing you to take in the panoramic views of the surrounding coastline (and the shipwrecks that dot it). You can also indulge in some bird-watching, picnicking, or swimming in the Bordjiesrif and Buffels Bay tidal pools.

2. GROOT CONSTANTIA

Founded in 1685, Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine-producing estate and one of its most famous. It’s nestled in Constantia Valley, where it benefits from the fertile soil and the Mediterranean-like climate, resulting in an annual turnover of 483 tonnes of wine.

You can book an on-site tour with an experienced guide, during which you can walk through the vineyards of Groot Constantia and learn about their history. Some of these tours also include wine tastings and a behind-the-scenes look at the wine-making process.

Or if you’re a foodie, Groot Constantia is also home to world-class restaurants, including Jonkershuis Eatery and Blockhouse Kitchen.

3. KIRSTENBOSCH NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is, undoubtedly, one of the world’s best botanical gardens. Located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, it spans 538 hectares, of which 36 hectares are cultivated to paradisiacal perfection; the remainder is a protected area consisting of natural forest and fynbos.

Kirstenbosch is also the habitat of a diverse range of fauna, ranging from grey squirrels and grysbok to sugarbirds and sunbirds.

Free guided tours are available at Kirstenbosch; that way, you can learn more about its blooms. Alternatively, stroll along the dozens of walking paths and trails at your own pace, observe the birdlife or enjoy a picnic in the garden, all while taking in a stunning view of the city.

4. ROBBEN ISLAND

Robben Island is a tourist’s must-see destination when visiting Cape Town. The island, lying 12 kilometres away from the city’s main harbour, was notorious for housing political prisoners between the 17th and 20th centuries.

Famous inmates included those who fought against the apartheid regime, from Walter Sisulu and Robert Sobukwe to Nelson Mandela.

Now, Robben Island is recognised as a World Heritage Site. Visitors can tour the old prison, as well as view Mandela’s cell. You can also catch a glimpse of penguins and seals or bask in the views of Table Mountain and the Cape Town skyline.

5. TABLE MOUNTAIN

No trip to Cape Town is complete without stopping by Table Mountain. The iconic, flat-topped berg offers breathtaking views of the City Bowl, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding suburban and rural landscapes.

You can reach the summit via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. The cable car ride takes about five minutes and rotates a full 360 degrees, giving you close-up views of the rugged slopes and surrounding vegetation.

Once on top, you can partake in many cool activities. These include abseiling, hiking, taking photos of the flora (avoid picking any flowers!), going on a guided tour about the mountain’s history, and grabbing a bite at the Table Mountain Café.

6. V&A WATERFRONT

Looking for a souvenir or just want to indulge in some retail therapy? The V&A Waterfront has got you covered.

Situated at the edge of the Mother City’s harbour, the waterfront features a variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. Whether it’s exploring the souvenir stores, spoiling yourself at the boutique outlets or enjoying some fine dining, you’re sure to find something that suits your taste.

Art lovers will take pleasure in visiting one of the many galleries at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in the Silo District.

If you’re looking for a thrill, take a ride atop the Cape Wheel or charter a helicopter tour for a scenic flight over the city.
