I may have to BIN my sofa after a viral TikTok trend went horribly wrong – people say I ‘should’ve just bought a throw’

A DIY enthusiast has revealed that she may have to bin her sofa after trying a viral TikTok trend that went horribly wrong.

Rather than splashing the cash on a new sofa, a savvy mum from the UK decided to try her hand at a popular social media hack.

However, things didn’t quite go to plan for the content creator, who is now debating whether to throw her once-loved piece of furniture away for good.

In a short clip shared online, the mother, who claimed that she is “winging life on the daily,” shared a close-up look at the DIY hack that ended unexpectedly.

The mother, who is known online as ‘Mrs Munday,’ explained that rather than spending hundreds of pounds on a trendy olive green sofa, she attempted to give her old grey sofa an upgrade on a budget.

Eager to show off her love of upcycling, the mother used her “free will” and ordered some fabric paint from Fabricoat in the shade Olive.

Instead of covering her sofa with throws, she used the entire tub of paint, as she said: “This is definitely a trust the process moment.”

Showing off the sofa after one coat, she gasped: “Patchy as hell – needs more coats.”

Unsure if the viral hack was a good idea, the mother then acknowledged: “May have to order a new sofa.”

Reflecting on her decision to paint her sofa, she continued: “Have I made a mistake? Wish I wasn’t so impulsive sometimes.”

Despite her regret, the mother confirmed that painting her sofa didn’t make it “crispy.”

She explained that she spent £59 on the paint and used a soft bristle brush to apply it to the sofa cushions.

As well as this, the mother recognised that it takes seven days for the paint to fully cure and then, once it is cured, the sofa can be washed and cleaned as normal.

Following this, once it is dried, the paint will not rub off onto clothing

Despite her uncertainty at her now green sofa, Mrs Munday doesn’t care that people “hate the colour.”

In fact, she likes the shade of her patchy sofa and confirmed it “beats grey.”

Social media users react

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @behindthecartz, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as at the time of writing, it had quickly racked up 420,100 views, 3,231 likes and 429 comments in just 24 hours.

But social media users were left totally divided by the sofa overhaul project – while some thought it looked “bad” and wondered what the mother was thinking, others “loved” it.

Another added: “On today’s list of things I will never do!”

A third commented: “Should not have trusted the process. Ruined sofa and a bill incoming for the new one.”

In response, the mother replied: “Oh well.”

Not only this, but someone else asked: “What were you thinking?”

Meanwhile, another wondered: “Why didn’t you just buy a couple of throws.”

But to this, the DIY fan wrote back and shared: “I did have throws. But I wanted to change the colour.”

However, others were impressed with the colour of the mother’s upgraded sofa.

One user beamed: “So much better. Grey sofas should be banned.”

A second chimed in: “I actually love it.”

Whilst another penned: “I’m gonna lie, it looks great.”
