Severe thunderstorms are expected to intensify across the province

Gauteng will face a turbulent weather pattern this evening, with thunderstorms predicted to intensify across the province.

Weather forecaster Odirile Modipa confirmed the severity, saying, “We are expecting severe thunderstorms over Gauteng this evening, extending into parts of Mpumalanga, central Limpopo, and the eastern Free State.”

The storm system could result in disruptive rainfall, especially in vulnerable areas.

Temperatures drop overnight in Gauteng

While rainfall dominates headlines, cooler nights will also affect daily routines. Johannesburg residents can expect an overnight minimum of 7°C, while Pretoria will remain slightly warmer at 13°C.

Modipa explained, “Overnight temperatures are expected to remain fairly cool in most parts of the country, with Gauteng cities seeing significant drops.”

Daytime temperatures are expected to improve moderately, with highs of 20°C in Johannesburg and 22°C in Pretoria.

Preparing for disruption

Authorities advise residents to remain alert for possible flooding and travel disruptions. Although rainfall offers relief from dry conditions, its intensity may overwhelm infrastructure in low-lying areas.

Fire danger warnings remain in place for the western regions of the country, further complicating the already challenging weather conditions.

Modipa stressed, “Disruptive rainfall is expected this evening, and communities should remain cautious about localised flooding and reduced visibility.”
