For many, renewing a driving licence has traditionally meant a day lost to queues and frustration.
However, a new wave of “Smart” Testing Centres is transforming this chore into a quick pit stop, bringing 21st-century efficiency to the heart of Gauteng’s townships.
From Atteridgeville to Maponya Mall, these cashless, appointment-only hubs are slashing renewal times to just ten minutes.
By integrating directly with the eNaTIS system and operating on Saturdays, the centres cater to the working person’s schedule while removing the “runners” and corruption that often plague traditional offices.

“When licensing is accessible and corruption-free, more people get properly licensed. Road safety starts with competence.” says MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela.
Beyond the sleek tech, the initiative is a win for local communities. The centres are largely staffed by local youth and women, proving that smarter governance can also mean better livelihoods.
As the province eyes its “Smart Mobility Plan” for 2030, the goal is simple: making the road to legal driving shorter, fairer, and safer for everyone.
