Of course, it’s too early to tell by how much they may increase beyond SASSA Older Person Grants in February 2026. On one hand you have the national fiscus which has performed relatively well over the last year. However, the existing social welfare budget for the Department of Social Development (DSD) is set to decrease over the next three years.
SLASHED BUDGETS A WORRY

Barring any intervention from the finance minister, DSD budgets drop from R285 billion by R14 billion, to R271 billion this year. And again in 2027 by R11 billion, to just R260 billion. However, civil society groups argue the sheer number of ‘core’ grant recipients for SASSA Older Person Grants in February 2026 means government cannot overlook them.
Therefore, the expectation is for another year of above-inflation increases for Childcare, Old Age, Disability and War Veterans. However, this is contingent on parliament’s request that major SASSA system vulnerabilities be fixed. That’s why biometric verification and income reviews have become so much stricter and more frequent over the last year.
