Jet Li makes rare public appearance, set to return to big screens

Chinese martial artist and actor Jet Li has returned to the spotlight after taking a lengthy break from acting.

Speaking on his So Be It YouTube channel, the 62-year-old appeared in good health and shared words of wisdom with his fans.

Li has been battling hyperthyroidism since around 2010. The condition causes fatigue, an accelerated heart rate and weight fluctuations.

In addition, the Romeo Must Die star has suffered long-term spinal and leg injuries sustained from decades of high-impact martial arts performances, which have left him in severe physical pain.

Jet Li returns to acting

As a result, Li has kept a low profile in the film industry and has appeared in only a handful of movies over the past 15 years.

In the YouTube video, Jet Li was accompanied by his youngest daughter, Jada Li, as the pair spoke about learning, observation and respect across generations.

“Everyone is unique. I always say don’t look down on young people,” Li said.

“Where I grew up, I heard people say the ’80s generation was the worst, then the ’90s generation — and now they say Gen Z is better.”

“Everyone is unique. Everyone we meet deserves respect. These days, you see 15-year-olds — even 13-year-olds — graduating from university.”

Despite keeping a low profile for much of the past decade, the martial arts legend is set to return to the big screen in Blades of the Guardians.

The film will mark Jet Li’s first acting role since portraying the Emperor of China in Disney’s live-action Mulan, released in 2020.

He previously revealed that he only agreed to appear in Mulan at his daughter’s request.
