Five fun ways to celebrate 367 years of South African wine

On 2 February 2026, South Africa will be celebrating a historic milestone: 367 years of wine-making excellence.

In 1659, the first bottle of wine was produced in Cape Town. This laid the foundation for Mzansi becoming one of the most famous, beloved wine-producing nations in the entire world.

If you fancy yourself a proudly South African wine aficionado, there are plenty of ways to celebrate our illustrious vino-making heritage.

FIVE FUN ACTIVITIES FOR THE WINE LOVER’S SOUL

With five activities to choose from, you’ll truly feel like your cup runneth over when 2 February rolls around:

1. TOUR A WINE FARM

When it comes to touring historic wine farms, there are many in South Africa that are ripe for picking. Image: Pexels

South Africa is home to a wide array of wine farms (and wineries). Many of these, including Klein Constantia have also garnered awards due to the top-notch quality vinos they produce.

Take some time off for yourself, or with your friends and family, to tour your local wine farm. There, you can visit the vineyards, learn about the wine-making process, explore their cellars or dine on some perfectly paired foods (more on that soon!). And, of course, you can sample the best of South African blends.

2. MAKE A ROAD TRIP OUT OF IT

Why stop at one wine farm? Embark on a road trip, where you can stop off and enjoy yourself at several farms all in one day (or several days, if you prefer).

For example, the Constantia Wine Route in Cape Town features many farms along the way, each offering memorable experiences that will appeal to your palate.

3. WINE AND DINE

Speaking of palate, jazz up your wine tastings by indulging in some food pairings. Numerous farm-based restaurants and bistros in Mzansi offer a variety of food-pairing options. These include chocolate, charcuterie, sorbet, pizza and even biltong!

4. PAIR WITH PAINT

Red or white? Whatever you choose, it pairs well with painting.

With your friend or your significant other at your side, join art classes where you can follow along with step-by-step painting instructions, and enjoy a tipple while doing so. With a palette in one hand and a glass in the other, it’s a great way to unwind, have fun and get your creative juices flowing.

5. ATTEND A WORKSHOP

Some farms offer workshops, where you can learn about the wine-making process in depth. You will also be guided on how to make your own blends, and who knows? It could kickstart a future in the vino industry!
