Job Description
The successful intern will gain exposure to advanced bacteriology research and diagnostics, including:
- Preparation of buffers and growth media
- Isolation, purification, and preservation of bacterial cultures
- DNA extraction and PCR from plant pathogenic bacteria
- Maintaining and expanding the national bacterial collection
- Assisting with data capturing and research documentation
- Providing research support for diagnostic services
- Assisting with soil preparation and glasshouse trials
- Collecting samples in different provinces
- Adhering to quality standards
- Compliance with SHE/OHS regulations and procedures
This role combines laboratory work, fieldwork, and applied research, offering comprehensive exposure to plant health research.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements:
- National Diploma or BSc in:
- Microbiology
- Biotechnology
- Plant Pathology
- Or a related field
- Postgraduate Diploma / Honours qualification will be an added advantage
- At least one (1) year experience in a plant bacteriology laboratory (advantageous)
- Experience in bacterial preservation (advantageous)
- Willingness to assist with soil preparation and glasshouse trials
- Willingness to participate in field trips
