Another Chinese automaker returns to South Africa with new vehicles

Another Chinese automaker has quietly made its way back into the South African market, with Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) officially relaunching locally and revealing pricing for its new vehicle range.

JMC, which exited South Africa several years ago, stated that it has undergone a comprehensive strategic reset and is now returning with a revised dealer network, enhanced aftersales support, and a more focused product offering aimed at local buyers.

Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa will distribute the brand, TopAuto reported, the same group responsible for bringing Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd (GAC) vehicles to the local market.

JMC plans to roll out up to 40 dealerships around South Africa by 2026.

At launch, the Chinese automaker will offer two models: the Vigus bakkie and the Carrying Plus commercial vehicle. Pricing for the range starts at R299 900, positioning the brand at the more affordable end of the market.

The Vigus is available in three configurations, including single- and double-cab options, with prices ranging from R299 900 to R499 900.

The Carrying Plus range targets business and fleet buyers, with chassis cab, dropside and box van variants priced between R344 885 and R419 900.

JMC South Africa pricing (VAT included):

  • Vigus Single Cab 4×2 manual – R299 900
  • Vigus Double Cab 4×2 automatic – R439 900
  • Vigus Double Cab 4×4 automatic – R499 900
  • Carrying Plus Chassis Cab – R344 885
  • Carrying Plus Dropside – R399 900
  • Carrying Plus Box Van – R419 900

JMC says its relaunch forms part of a broader push to regain ground in South Africa’s competitive bakkie and light commercial vehicle market, which has seen a surge of new Chinese entrants in recent years.
