Johannesburg Water warns NOT to drink ‘smelly’ water

Johannesburg Water has issued an alert over possible water contamination affecting parts of Johannesburg’s central business district and Bezuidenhout Valley.

The utility says the affected areas include Albertina Sisulu Road and surrounding streets, including 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th avenues, as well as 10th Street.

Strong smell

Residents in these areas reported a strong smell coming from their tap water on Monday.

As a precaution, Johannesburg Water has advised residents not to consume tap water until further notice while investigations are under way.

“Johannesburg Water has isolated the water supply in the affected section and has taken water samples for testing at its laboratory to confirm water quality,” the utility said in a statement.

Pipeline will be flushed

The water supply has been shut off in the affected area to allow for assessments.

Johannesburg Water warned that the isolation may result in additional outages in surrounding suburbs, including Bezuidenhout Valley and nearby areas.

To mitigate the impact, the utility says alternative water supplies are being provided through roaming water tankers to assist affected residents.

Once testing is complete, the pipeline will be flushed as part of the restoration process.

Johannesburg Water says further updates will be communicated once the test results are available.
