Botswana marked Christmas Day with the arrival of 102 newborn babies delivered at public hospitals across the country, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
The ministry shared the statistics on Thursday morning, describing the births as a joyful moment during the festive season.
Botswana Christmas Day births: More girls than boys born
Acting MoH spokesperson Mompoloki Lekoto said slightly more girls than boys were born on the day.
“Out of the 102 babies delivered, 50 were male while 52 were female,” Lekoto confirmed.
Princess Marina Hospital recorded the highest number of Christmas Day births, with 21 deliveries.
Scottish Livingstone Hospital followed with 11 births, while Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown registered six deliveries.
Other public health facilities across the country also recorded births, contributing to the national total.
Full statistics still being compiled
According to Mmegi Online, Lekoto said the ministry is still consolidating data from all public health facilities before releasing a detailed breakdown.
“We have 27 facilities in total, including two referral hospitals, seven district hospitals and 17 primary hospitals. We are still compiling the overall statistics so that we can provide detailed information, including delivery times and whether there were twins or triplets,” Lekoto said.
He added that the ministry will share the complete statistics with the nation once the process is finalised.
The Christmas Day births brought moments of celebration to maternity wards across Botswana, offering a hopeful start for families welcoming new life during the festive season.
