According to recent statistics from the NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) and Lifesaving South Africa (LSA), approximately 1 477 fatal drownings are recorded in South Africa each year.

These incidents increase during the festive season, with most occurring in the ocean.

High-risk factors for coastal drownings include rip currents, swimming in unpatrolled areas, lack of swimming skills, and swimming under the influence of alcohol.

Provinces that recorded the highest number of drowning cases between 2024 and 2025 are KwaZulu-Natal, followed by the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

The good news is that drowning is preventable. If you have travelled from Gauteng to the coast, follow these tips to keep your family safe:

  1. Swim Between the Flags
Only swim between the red and yellow flags, which are areas patrolled by lifeguards.
  2. Check the Weather Forecast and Tides
Avoid swimming during bad weather, which can cause strong waves, high surf, and rip currents.
  3. Don’t Swim Alone
Always swim with a friend so help is nearby if you’re in trouble.
  4. Supervise Children
Keep your children within arm’s reach at all times. Even calm, shallow water can be dangerous.
  5. Don’t Drink Alcohol Before Swimming
Alcohol can impair your judgment and slow down your reactions.
  6. Identify Rip Currents
If you are caught in fast-moving water pulling you out to sea, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore.
  7. Wear a Life Jacket
If you are a weak swimmer, always wear a life jacket.
  8. Respect the Rules and Signage
Lifeguard instructions and warning signs can save your life.
  9. Stay Hydrated & Use Sunscreen
Drink water and apply sunscreen to avoid heatstroke and sunburn.
  10. Know Emergency Numbers
  • NSRI: 082 911
  • Police/SAPS: 10111
  • Local Lifeguard or EMS numbers are available at the beach.
