Saulsville mass shooting suspect’s case postponed to New Year’s Eve

The case against a 32-year-old suspect linked to the Saulsville mass shooting has been postponed to 31 December to allow for further investigations and a possible bail application.

The suspect appeared briefly in the Attridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing 12 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.

Proceedings were held in camera in the magistrate’s chambers.

What happened in Saulsville?

The shooting took place earlier this month in Saulsville, Atteridgeville west of Pretoria, when gunmen opened fire on a group of people, killing at least 11 people including a three‑year‑old child.

“I can confirm that a total of 25 people were shot,” police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said, adding that 14 had been hospitalised.

Police said the shooting occurred at around 04:00.

It is understood that the incident took place at a home being used as an informal tavern.

At least three unknown gunmen entered the premises and started “randomly shooting”.

The shebeen’s owner was reportedly among the survivors.

Investigation ongoing

Police have confirmed that investigations are continuing and that a manhunt is under way for two outstanding suspects believed to be connected to the attack.

Authorities say additional evidence is being gathered to strengthen the case against those involved.

The court is expected to consider the suspect’s bail application when the matter resumes at the end of the month.
