A Sharksfest fan was forced to fork out over R1000 for an Uber ride home over the weekend due to a drastic surge from the E-hailing app.
The fan festival took place on Saturday, 20 December at the King Park Stadium in Durban.
The Sharks beat visitors, the Bulls, 21-12.
SHARKSFEST FANS PAY SPIKED UBER PRICES
On TikTok, several Sharksfest visitors have revealed how they were forced to pay hundreds of rands to request a ride home on the Uber app.
One user – @21reasons_why – claimed that they spent R1117 to get a ride home.
The TikToker, who lives in Pinetown, claimed that they only arrived home at 4:00 the next morning. The Sharks fan bemoaned “spending more money on Uber than on the game”, vowing to “never go again”.
Other Sharksfest fans claimed they did not get to enjoy the match after noticing the surge on the E-hailing app. Some had to walk a distance to get into their ride due to increased traffic.
Many fans paid a minimum of R750 for a ride home.

WHAT IS SURGE PRICING?
Similar to what happened at Sharksfest, a surge in E-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt occurs when the following happens…
- Increased demand
- Spike in prices
- Longer waiting periods
Prices can change quickly during the surge and differ from city to city.
