Television presenter Minenhle “Minnie” Dlamini has reached a settlement with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), agreeing to repay R50,000 received irregularly from a National Lotteries Commission (NLC) grant.
The payment dates back to 2016 and was linked to a substantial R24.8 million grant awarded to the Mshandukani Foundation.
While the funds were officially earmarked to promote awareness for the Rio Olympics, an SIU probe discovered that significant sums were diverted to various recipients, including Dlamini, without legal justification.
Investigators found that the foundation’s intended social programmes were bypassed in favour of unauthorised payouts.
Dlamini, however, has been commended for her cooperation with the unit. She reportedly acknowledged that the funds were not lawfully hers and committed to the repayment as part of the settlement.
The recovery forms part of a much wider crackdown on systemic corruption within the NLC.
To date, the SIU investigation has led to the freezing of numerous assets and the targeting of high-ranking officials involved in the misappropriation of public funds intended for community development and sports.
