A suspected member of an “airport following” gang has been fatally wounded during a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire with a multi-disciplinary police team in Rabie Ridge.
The operation was launched after SAPS Counter Intelligence and various tactical units received information regarding suspects targeting travellers arriving at OR Tambo International Airport.
The team tracked the suspects’ vehicle to Midrand, where a high-speed pursuit ensued after the driver refused to stop for officers.
The chase ended in Rabie Ridge, where the suspects jumped out of their vehicle and opened fire on law enforcement. During the confrontation, police returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect.
Two other accomplices managed to escape on foot, prompting an immediate manhunt in the surrounding area. Unlicensed firearms were recovered at the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate the gang had robbed a victim at a hotel earlier that day after following them from the airport.
The operation involved a massive coordination of state and private security resources, including SAPS Airwing, the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, and Tracker Connect.
