A local councillor is under police investigation after a video surfaced showing her discharging a firearm during a traditional ceremony over the weekend.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 am on Sunday, 21 December, in the KwaNokuthula township.
Councillor Kolwapi was attending a celebration for 18-year-old Tsepiso Martin at a residence on Sajini Street when she was filmed firing several shots into the air.

South African Police Service (SAPS) detectives have officially charged Kolwapi with pointing a firearm. Authorities are also reviewing additional charges, including two counts of discharging a firearm in a public place and reckless endangerment.
The act appears to be a direct violation of the Firearm Control Act, which strictly prohibits the celebratory or negligent discharge of weapons. Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing as they scrutinise the footage and interview witnesses.
At present, both the local municipality and Kolwapi’s political party have declined to comment on the matter. The councillor remains at the centre of the probe while detectives determine the legality of the firearm used.
The incident has sparked a debate regarding the conduct of public officials and the safety risks associated with discharging firearms during community festivities.
