Three coaches who could replace Broos as Bafana coach

Hugo Broos has just over six months left in his contract as Bafana Bafana coach but his replacement has not been found.

The 73-year-old Belgian coach confirmed that he will retire from coaching after next year’s FIFA World Cup. During his tenure as Bafana coach, Broos helped the side to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and also guided the team to their first World Cup qualification in 23 years.

Three names could potentially take over as Bafana coach after July next year.

Pitso Mosimane

Jingles coached Bafana from 2010 to 2012, but failure to qualify for AFCON saw him get sacked. He has since achieved success across the continent, making him the best coach the country has ever produced.

“There’s no any other better time to coach Bafana than now,” Mosimane told MSW when asked if he was interested in Broos’ post.

“We have a good generation of under-20s, under-17s. South Africa is in a good spot, but sometimes we forget that we’ve been in this space before,” he added.

Sébastien Desabre

The 49-year-old could succeed Broos at Bafana if he decides to leave DR Congo. He has guided DRC to the intercontinental World Cup play-offs after edging out Nigeria last month.

He has transformed the Leopards in a short space of time and could fancy taking on the Bafana job next year.

Benni McCarthy

Benni is currently with the Kenyan national football team but if an opportunity arises for him to coach his national team, he will grab it with both hands. The former FC Porto striker has made it clear that he was ready to coach Bafana.

Hugo Broos has two tournaments to prepare for as Bafana coach before retiring. His side play Angola on Monday in their AFCON opener in Morocco.
