Another tavern shooting in Gauteng has claimed nine lives, leaving 10 others injured and fighting for their lives in hospital.
Gauteng police are searching for 12 suspects who randomly opened fire at a local tavern in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that the incident occurred shortly before 01:00 at a tavern in the Tambo section.
“Nine people were murdered and 10 wounded and taken to a nearby hospital following a shooting at KwaNoxolo Tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal. Some of the victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” said Sibeko.
Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner, Major General Frans Kekana, is on the scene.
The motive behind the Bekkersdal shooting is not yet known, and the matter remains under police investigation.
The shocking incident comes just weeks after Gauteng was labelled a crime scene by officials, following the killing of 11 people in a tavern shooting in Saulsville, Pretoria.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi has repeatedly slammed local taverns, describing them as safe havens that breed crime and contribute to the high rate of gun violence in the country.
