A mass shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal on the West Rand has left at least nine people dead.
The shooting took place at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Suspects open fire on patrons
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the attack happened shortly before 01:00.
She said about twelve suspects arrived at the tavern in a white kombi and a silver sedan.
The suspects opened fire on patrons inside the tavern and continued shooting as they fled the scene.
The tavern is licensed.
Mathe confirmed that the shooting left nine people dead, while ten others sustained injuries.
Emergency services took the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Police launch a manhunt after shooting
Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations, together with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit, have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
Mathe said Major General Kekana is at the scene overseeing the investigation.
Police have not yet made any arrests.
