- KwaZulu-Natal has recorded a notable reduction in road fatalities compared to the same period last year.
- Authorities attribute the improvement to intensified festive season road safety operations involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
- Thousands of vehicles have been stopped, with arrests and vehicle removals contributing to safer roads.
The Province of KwaZulu-Natal has recorded a significant decrease in road accident fatalities so far compared to the same period in 2024. This is according to preliminary reports released by the provincial Department of Transport and Human Settlements.
Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has credited the decline to intensified law enforcement efforts across the province.
“We commend our energized team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate for their visibility in all corners of the province. We also thank National Minister Barbara Creecy for augmenting the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation through the deployment of the National Traffic Police,” said Duma.
The decrease follows ongoing operations rolled out since 1 December by the Road Traffic Inspectorate, National Traffic Police, municipal traffic officers, and the South African Police Service.
More than 70,000 vehicles have been stopped, over 10,000 motorists charged with traffic offences including speeding, more than 500 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 773 vehicles suspended and removed from the road.
