  • Authorities say investigations are underway and road safety operations have been intensified.

Five people lost their lives in two separate road accidents in Mpumalanga on Saturday, including a mother and her child.

Three people were killed when a minibus taxi overturned on the D799 road between Kaapsehoop and Mbombela after the driver allegedly lost control on a curve, causing the vehicle to roll several times.

Three male passengers were declared dead at the scene, while one passenger was critically injured and four others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Mbombela.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the minibus was reportedly travelling from Johannesburg to Mozambique.

“Initial indications suggest the driver may have left the N4 toll road at the D799 turn-off to evade law enforcement. An investigation is underway,” said Mmusi.

In a separate incident, a mother and her child were fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the N12 near Delmas.

The department, together with its partner agencies, has vowed to continue intensified road safety operations, including block patrols, stop-and-checks and speed enforcement.
