Cloudy conditions and rainfall expected in parts of Eastern Cape

Parts of the Eastern Cape can expect increasing cloud cover and rainfall as weather systems move eastward across the country. Forecasts indicate that northern sections of the province will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms.

According to forecaster Phemelo Zonke, rain bands will stretch across several regions.

“A broad band of isolated showers and thunderstorms” is expected to affect “the northern parts of the Eastern Cape into the Free State,” she said.

Severe weather risks remain in the Eastern Cape

The South African Weather Service has issued a level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of the province. These conditions may bring intense rainfall and dangerous weather elements.

“Those severe thunderstorms possibly resulting in heavy downpours of rain, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail or excessive lightning,” Zonke warned.

She added that residents should stay alert, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Cooler nights and unsettled weekend outlook

Mthatha is expected to see overnight temperatures drop to around 13 degrees, while daytime conditions remain mild but unsettled. Cloudy skies may persist for much of the weekend, with intermittent rainfall.

Zonke said the weekend forecast shows little improvement.

“Expecting partly cloudy conditions through the central as well as the eastern parts of the country,” she noted, with showers continuing at times.
