  • Traffic arrests have risen by 16.2% this December following 639 nationwide roadblocks and over 700,000 vehicle inspections.
  • Authorities issued 168,427 fines and impounded 2,552 public transport vehicles, despite a notable 7.8% decrease in speeding offences.
  • Minister Barbara Creecy confirmed 24-hour patrols will continue through the Christmas peak to combat extreme speeding and drink-driving.

Traffic arrests have climbed by 16.2% this December compared to last year, according to a preliminary Arrive Alive report released by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy in Cape Town.

The spike follows a nationwide crackdown involving over 600 roadblocks and the inspection of more than 700,000 vehicles.

While speeding arrests fell by 7.8% and pedestrian transgressions dropped significantly, extreme violations remain a concern.

Notable incidents include a motorist caught at 193km/h in Gauteng and a driver in the Eastern Cape found to be ten times over the legal alcohol limit.

To date, over 168,000 fines have been issued, while nearly 4,000 unroadworthy vehicles were removed from the roads.

Minister Creecy warned of a zero-tolerance approach as the Christmas peak approaches, with 24-hour patrols and daily sobriety checkpoints planned.

“Every road death is preventable,” she stated, urging travellers to prioritise rest, vehicle maintenance, and sober driving to ensure they “arrive alive.”
