  • JMPD officers detained three men, including two unauthorised interns, for impersonating City Power officials and extorting R3,500 from a building owner.
  • The suspects used official uniforms and false titles to demand cash payments under the guise of conducting electricity meter inspections.
  • The trio is currently in custody at Johannesburg Central SAPS following the recovery of the stolen funds and the seizure of their fraudulent equipment.

Three men are in police custody following a targeted sting operation at Evette Court on Jeppe Street, where they were allegedly caught impersonating City Power employees to extort money from local residents.

The arrests were carried out by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU) after a swift intervention by EnviroMongz security personnel, who initially detained the trio and alerted the authorities.

The suspects reportedly gained access to the premises by donning official City Power uniforms and claiming they were there to conduct routine inspections of electricity meters.

Once inside, they allegedly intimidated a building owner, demanding a “spot fine” or payment to resolve fabricated issues with the property’s supply.

Upon further investigation by the JMPD, the background of the suspects came to light:

  • Two suspects were identified as City Power interns who were strictly unauthorised to conduct any form of fieldwork.
  • The third suspect, a Ugandan national, reportedly posed as a senior City Power manager to add a veneer of authority to the operation.

During the arrest, officers recovered R3,500 in cash, which is believed to be the direct proceeds of the extortion from the building owner. The official uniforms used to facilitate the deception were also seized as evidence.

“The swift coordination between private security and our Tactical Response Unit has successfully halted a predatory scheme targeting honest citizens,” a spokesperson for the JMPD noted.

The three men have been transferred to the Johannesburg Central South African Police Service (SAPS) station for formal processing. They face charges including extortion, fraud, and impersonating utility officials.
