Taxi associations and long-distance taxi drivers signed a road safety pledge at the Noord Taxi Rank in Johannesburg, committing to obey traffic laws and prioritise passenger safety during the busy festive travel period.
The campaign, led by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), comes amid growing concern over the rising number of fatal road crashes involving taxis during peak holiday travel.
Decisive steps
Gauteng SANTACO spokesperson Sabata Mbobo said the industry was taking decisive steps to curb reckless behaviour, stressing that alcohol use would not be tolerated in taxis – by either drivers or passengers.
“Our passengers are sometimes uncontrollable, but we are trying to manage the situation,” Mbobo said.
“Passengers often consume alcohol while travelling and may force drivers to stop in places where it is not allowed. No one is permitted to drink alcohol in a taxi, especially not the driver. A driver must not operate a vehicle while drinking.”
Work closely with law enforcement
Mbobo added that taxi associations would work closely with law enforcement to ensure compliance with road safety regulations throughout the festive season.
The pledge forms part of broader efforts to reduce road fatalities and ensure safer travel for commuters as traffic volumes increase nationwide.
