Ex-MP blames BEE for Springbok Adriaan Richter’s money woes

A former ANC MP, who later left and criticised the political party, has blamed transformative legislation like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) for retired Springbok Adriaan Richter’s money problems.

The former rugby player made headlines this week after auctioning off his 1995 World Cup medal and miniature trophy to make ends meet.

Richter claims he has been unable to find employment due to “being white”.

FORMER MP BLASTS BEE OVER SPRINGBOK’S MONEY WOES

On his X app, former ANC MP Lawrence E McDonald sympathised with Springbok Adriaan Richter’s sale of his 1995 World Cup memorabilia.

The ex-politician, who left the party last year and uses his platform to now “blast ANC racial laws”, claimed BEE and “white genocide” was to blame for the rugby player’s money problems.

He tweeted: “Heartbreaking: 1995 Springbok hero Adriaan Richter just sold his Mandela-presented World Cup medal for R62,500 to survive. Why? ‘I’m struggling financially because I’m white.’

He continued: “This is economic genocide against white South Africans, BEE policies crushing us while crime skyrockets. Wake up, SA!”

McDonald used the hashtags #WhiteGenocide and #BEEFails in the X post.

ADRIAAN RICHTER: ‘I CAN’T FIND WORK’

This week, former Springbok Adriaan Richter revealed how he auctioned off his 1995 Rugby World Cup medal and miniature trophy for R62 500 and R34 000, respectively.

Richter told the media that he was forced to part with the historical memorabilia due to financial hardship.

He said, “I definitely didn’t sell it because I wanted to. It’s just because we live in South Africa, and I can’t find work. It’s not nice.”

He added, “I have children who would love to have it. But in the end, we live in a completely different country. At my age, I can’t find work either. Nobody wants to hire me. It’s absolutely dire.”

Reports later emerged that Adriaan Richter owned several farms and assets, and survived on R50 000 in rental income.

Richter claimed he “struggled to get contracts due to BEE”. He also revealed he had several bad harvests.
